Blew me away

I finished Loved and Lost by Stephanie Kusiak. What can I even say about this book? It was a roller coaster ride of emotions for me. Brilliantly written with a story line like no other I have ever read. It begs the question, what would you do if you had the chance to do it all over again knowing what you know now? But it really is so much more than that. I don't even know that I can find the words to accurately describe what this book evoked for and within me. Quite simply it was one of the best novels I have ever read, and I have read a whole lot of them. Please check it out, I cannot recommend it enough.

I don't give five star ratings because the endings and surprises of most romance stories are usually quite easy to guess. The characters are equally strong and written equally well. You know both main characters very well and feel for them early on.

Like so many people, I have enjoyed on many levels the long-running television series in which Poirot provides the most in-depth and thoughtful interpretation of Agatha Christie's detective, so I was fascinated to read his personal take on the experience. Having recently watched Suchet in a couple of documentaries, I have been won over by the man's gentle nature and self-effacing charm, so I immensely enjoyed this autobiography which will also serve as a useful historical record of the making of the programmes.

The book reveals him to be very like Poirot in many ways, including his modest and polite manner allied with extreme competence. I must admit I didn't realise how many other highly-acclaimed parts he had played in the theatre, and I admire him even more now for having juggled such a demanding and long-running series with so many other roles.

I'm now very tempted to invest in a complete set of the Poirot DVDs and watch them in the order that they were made, to appreciate the commentary that this book provides...

Great story behind the making of the PBS series and the Poirot character

David Suchet's story reads like a biography of a close friend. He describes how he got the role of Poirot and how he developed the character from Agatha Christie's books over the 25 years and 13 seasons the PBS mystery show aired. Especially poignant is the story of filming Curtain, which ends with Poirot's death, as well as the the final episode of Dead Man's Folly filmed on location at Greenwood, Agatha Christie's summer home in Devon, England. Dame Agatha and David Suchet made the character of Hercule Poirot come to life. Fans will truly enjoy this final story of the merging of a great story teller, fantastic actor, and memorable character.

A "Must Have" for Poirot fans

This is a fantastic book and like the Poirot series is enjoyable from beginning to end. I intend to refer to it often as I continue to view my treasured DVDs. I have all of the David Suchet's Poirot series, except #13 that I have ordered and am waiting for it to be released.
I had read some if Agatha Christie's books and saw one or two of the Poirot movies but did not become such an avid fan until Mr. Suchet added such charm to Poirot's character. Now I shall never say "Good Bye" to my dear Belgian friend. When I leave for work with a slightly mismatched pair of gloves, I hear Poirot's voice "One must never let one's self go Hastings" and I go back inside the house for the matching glove. Hopefully, Mr. Suchet has added a little of Poirot in most of us.
My first time eating a mango was after Poirot's demonstration and now I have the directions and delightful story on page 117.
ITV people complain of expense to make the Poirot series - Please keep in mind the money brought it. I have purchased so many things connected with Poirot since the series began. The Christopher Gunning Cds, books, tote bags, Poirot and Agatha Christie charm bracelets, "Death on the Orient Express" earrings to name a few. I dislike reality TV and wouldn't own a TV if it wasn't for quality programs such as these. I hope the brilliant screenwriters, producers and directors mentioned in this book will bring Poirot back to life and continue with Miss Marple and other Agatha Christie stories.

Recently I was very happy to agree to an interview with ABC News because I wanted to help change the lives of young people and adults in a positive way. The interview about my book was aired in the evening News segment. That interview is only the start of my journey of fulfilling my goal of helping young minds.
As a back story, "Once Upon a Rock" which is about my life growing up in Jamaica, the challenges I faced and how through sheer audacity to dream I made personal successes through goal setting and hard work. At the genesis of my plan to write it, I was asked to give a couple of guest lecturers about the Caribbean diaspora and language, specifically a practical explanation of the book "Salt", which at the time was being studied in the AP classes at the private school where I worked. The students loved my presentation so much so that later on it came up for discussion with the thought of adding such lecturers to the curriculum. The students enjoyed hearing my stories and felt that they wanted more on a regular basis in their English and Literature classes. Now that I finally wrote and published the book, my goal is to have it included in curriculums as a literature book thus becoming part of literacy movements - plus delivering motivational speeches and talks to students and young adults. Good Book, Better Course

I had the privledge of taking the course that Dr. Erickson teaches that uses this text. It is a decent book and an excellent class.
The book would probably not be as useful to those who do not have formal instruction, but would be a good reference with simple examples for those who already have some experience with Process Controls.

Throughout the exposition of the different systems which involves criticism and evaluation, the author has tried to be fair and impartial to them and to present many difficult and obscure points in as clear and correct a manner. Ignorance of Indian philosophy, specially of Buddhism and Vedanta, is still profound and has given rise to un-informed or ill-informed accounts and misleading criticisms. It has been the aim of the book to remove such misconceptions. Honest difference of opinion in interpretation is legitimate in philosophy, but it does not entitle us to impose our own preconceived notions on a system which are repelled by its original texts. The work is only an outline of a vast subject and has no pretensions to completeness.

The present treatise is a critical study of different systems of Indian Philosophy based on original sources and its principal value lies in their interpretation. On almost all fundamental points the author has quoted from the original texts to enable the reader to compare the interpretations with the text. The book opens with the survey of Indian philosophical thought as found in the Vedas, the Upanisads and Bhagavadgita. It proceeds to the study of Materialism, Jainism and Early Buddhism, Sunyavada, Vijnanavada and Svatantra Vijnanavada. Good introduction for the dedicated student

Indian philosophy contains an immense number of traditions, works, arguments and counter-arguments, so no single introductory work can do full justice to this subject. A great obstacle for non-Indian students is that the vocabulary of Indian philosophy is very specialized and translations to English concepts are bound to be more or less erroneous. Authors of introductory books have to walk a fine line in mixing translated concepts with original concepts, too much of either will render the book incomprehensible.

Translation is the area where this book excels. Chandradhar Sharma's approach to translation is meticulous, consistent and effective. Concepts such as reality and cause are generally given in English, but always with the Sanskrit translation in parenthesis if the occasion requires it. More difficult concepts are often presented the other way around, with the approximate English translation in parenthesis. Highly important and specialized concepts, such as prakrti and purusa, are not translated but are explained in great detail. The clarity of this approach is admirable and the message is clear: there are some concepts which you need to learn from the Indian point of view in order to understand Indian philosophy.

However, although the philosophical translation is excellent, this is still not an easy book to read. It is littered with sentences like "Taking his stand on the Brhadaranyaka, the Chhandogya and the Manukya, Gaudapada identified the Unborn and Non-dual Absolute with the Atman or Brahman or Amatra or Turiya or Advaita which can be realized by Pure Knowledge or Asparshayoga or Vaisharadya or Amanibhava" (p. 248). Learning to understand Indian philosophy requires dedication, and so does this book. But for the dedicated student, this is an excellent resource for getting acquainted with this vast topic, above all with its vocabulary. The ideas might seem incomprehensible the first time around, but the next time you read a book on Indian philosophy you will probably have a vague sense of familiarity.

I do have one point of minor criticism also. I would have enjoyed some form of chronology and maybe brief philosopher biographies in this book, just to know in which centuries each philosopher and school of philosophy thrived and their social context. But on the other hand I appreciate the fact that the book is fairly short, and related information can of course easily be found from other sources such as Wikipedia with a little effort.

The Kindle edition is poorly formatted

I have the paperback edition and have found this book quite valuable. But the Kindle edition has quality issues and I returned it for refund.

(1) Numerous typos on each page.
(2) Font size changes abruptly
(3) The original text appears as an image. It is followed by the same text as non-image.

The process that was used to convert this book to the kindle edition is flawed and makes for an unpleasant reading experience.
