Steve Wright is a visual effects compositing veteran with 70 broadcast television commercials and over 60 feature films credits. He's developed video games at Atari, done 3D animations for Robert Abel and Associates, and was senior compositor and 2D technical director at Kodak's Cinesite. Steve is now a freelance, digital-compositing guru, who teaches, trains, writes, and develops on-line training programs.

Tough For Beginners

It took me a long time to review this book, primarily because the only topic I understood prior to reading the book was chroma-keying. The other topics were only buzzwords to me (including "digital compositing"!), or completely foreign. If you're a beginner, you will progress slowly. You will only be carried forward if you have a strong desire to understand digital compositing or if the subject is just very interesting to you. If you are an intermediate photo/video person, you will pick things up more quickly.

The book is well illustrated and the writing is clear. That's a good one-two combo that I "require" before I give a good rating to any non-fiction book. The book, if you stick with it, will give you a solid understanding of digital compositing. With that background, you can progress on your own through practice - or you can use your new base knowledge as a springboard to even more technical study in the subject.

Just be forewarned that if you are a beginner, the road will be rough, but satisfying if you stick to it. I cautiously recommend the book for beginners. For intermediates, this is a great book.

A humbling experience

I have been editing videos for much longer than I care to admit. I even wrote software plugins used by video editors all over the world. So, naturally, I know something about digital editing and compositing. Or so I thought.

Reading this book has been a truly humbling experience, as it has shown me how little I know. And as I am reading through it, I keep discovering new ideas and new ways of doing things, and I just have to keep asking, "Why have I not thought of this?!"

Steve Wright sure knows what he is talking about. Well, many authors do. But many authors do not know how to explain what they know and just leave you scratching your head frustrated, wanting for more. Not so Steve Wright. He has an amazing ability of letting you, the reader, understand what to do and how to do it. The book even comes with a DVD which contains many of the pictures from the book, plus several videos showing what is hard to explain in words or just printed images. And it comes with numerous exercises to practice what you have learned.

But wait, there is more. This book does not rely on any specific editing software, let alone a specific operating system. It does not matter whether you are a Mac user or a Windows user or a Unix user. It does not matter whether you use Adobe Premiere or Sony Vegas or any other video editing package. What he teaches you applies equally to all of them.

Last but not least, Steve Wright does not look down upon you. He does not think you are too dumb to delve into some mathematical formulae. But neither does he expect you to have an advanced (or any) degree in mathematics. Everything he says is clear to understand.

Whether you are just starting in editing and compositing or you are a seasoned pro, you need this book. Not on your shelf but in your hands. You will not set it down until you have finished reading it (well, except for trying it all out). And you will be referring to it for years to come.

One stop shop for Compositing know-how

One of the best aspects of Mr. Wrights new 3rd edition is how perfectly up to date it is. Now, this is truly fantastic for beginners, but it is actually crucial for already experienced professionals who need to catch up with the latest trends in this line of work. It contains the latest areas of development in digital compositing; that being 3D, stereo and CGI compositing. It even has a new 3D section devoted to helping 2D compositors learn key concepts and terminology essential to working in 3D. Before this book came out this information could only be obtained by experiencing production in a visual effects studio or by reading industry related white papers. And the best part of it all is that it is presented, as everything else in this book, in perfectly clear terms and with exceptional examples. Thanks not only to the quality of the text but also to the inclusion of a DVD with tons of great audiovisual material.

Take away any pre-conceptions you might have about software preferences. The information contained in this book applies to every compositing package in the market today; that being either NUKE, Shake, Digital Fusion or After Effects.

I find it perfectly adequate to be writing this review as I am finishing working as a digital compositor on another Hollywood block buster. Where this book, just as his previous edition older brother, are standing proud right next to me; knowing that they saved me more than once by providing me the info and tools necessary to conquer yet another challenging shot.

About the Author
Christopher A. Bartlett is the Thomas D. Casserly, Jr., Professor Emeritus of Business Administration at Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration. He received an economics degree from the University of Queensland, Australia, and both masters and doctorate degrees in business administration from Harvard University. Prior to his academic career, he was a marketing manager with Alcoa in Australia, a management consultant in McKinsey and Company's London office, and country general manager of Baxter Laboratories' subsidiary company in France.

He joined the faculty of Harvard Business School in 1979, and over the following 30 years his interests focused on strategic and organizational challenges confronting managers in multinational corporations and on the process of managing transformational change. While at HBS, he served as faculty chair of the International Senior Management Program, area head of the School's General Management Unit, faculty chairman of the Program for Global Leadership, and as chair of the Humanitarian Leadership Program.

He is the author or co-author of nine books, including Managing Across Borders: The Transnational Solution (coauthored with Sumantra Ghoshal), named by Financial Times as one of the 50 most influential business books of the century. The Individualized Corporation, his subsequent major research book with Ghoshal, was the winner of the Igor Ansoff Award for the best new work in strategic management and was named one of the Best Business Books for the Millennium by Strategy+Business magazine. Both books have been translated into over 10 foreign languages. His articles have appeared in journals such as Harvard Business Review, Sloan Management Review, Strategic Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, and Journal of International Business Studies. He has also researched and written over 100 case studies and teaching notes, and their sales of over 3 1/2 million copies make him the best-selling case author ever. He has been elected by his colleagues as a fellow of the Academy of Management, the Academy of International Business, the Strategic Management Society, and the World Economic Forum.

Paul W. Beamish is the Donald Triggs Canada Research Chair in International Business at the Ivey Business School, University of Western Ontario. He is the author or coauthor of numerous books, articles, contributed chapters, and teaching cases. His articles have appeared in Academy of Management Review, Academy of Management Journal, Strategic Management Journal, Journal of International Business Studies (JIBS), Organization Science, and elsewhere. He has received best research awards from the Academy of Management and the Academy of International Business (AIB). In 1997 and 2003, he was recognized in the Journal of International Management as one of the top three contributors worldwide to the international strategic management literature in the previous decade. He served as Editor-in-Chief of JIBS from 1993–97. He worked for Procter & Gamble and Wilfrid Laurier University before joining Ivey's faculty in 1987.

He has supervised 25 doctoral dissertations, many involving international joint ventures and alliances. His consulting, management training, and joint venture facilitation activities have been in both the public and private sector.

At Ivey, he has taught in a variety of school programs, including the Executive MBA offered at its campus in Hong Kong. From 1999–2004, he served as Associate Dean of Research. He currently serves as Director of Ivey Publishing, the distributor of Ivey's collection of over 2,400 current cases; Ivey's Asian Management Institute (AMI); and the cross-enterprise center, Engaging Emerging Markets.

He is a Fellow of the Academy of International Business, Royal Society of Canada, and Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada.

A winning formula
By read til you drop
I was very impressed with how this book was put together. Each chapter and the subsequent case study and additional readings were right on target and clearly presented each new concept and followed it up with examples of companies who have deployed the business approach discussed. I can see why this book is in its 7th edition. The authors have placed a great amount of importance and effort in writing insightful case studies that are well researched and well written. After studying this book, the reader will have a much better understanding of how global business is conducted and how to evaluate successful management approaches. For instance, after reading the successful management approaches of global Proctor & Gamble, I have much greater confidence that the new head of the Veterans Administration will be able to reorganize and lead that organization out of the mess that the previous leadership engendered. The P&G story was impressive as are all of the case studies. Extremely informative.

Good content but hard to read

I like the content of the book, but I dislike the author's choice of words. I believe there is definitely away for grad students like me to learn about Transnational Management without having to spend extra time figuring out the meaning of words or what was being said.
By the way, I really like the case studies available in the book.

About the Author
John Kortum began investigating the human sensory system at a young age and made two remarkable discoveries. He found that our ordinary five senses have extraordinary capacities and that the human body has an obvious and consistent way of communicating health information. In 2001, he approached the health care delivery system to test his discoveries with compelling results. Since 1991, John has facilitated perception-increasing seminars throughout the United States and abroad. He supports clients and healthcare providers who are committed to embracing the unrecognized bonds of healing. He continues to refine his heuristic for perceptive health care, and expand our knowledge base of the human potential in order to fully deploy the assets of the mind. John lives near Washington, D.C.

Interesting but poorly presented.

I had great expectations from the advertising I watched that this book would enable me to understand and practice the Kortum Technique (which is promoted as an observational technique that does not involve special skills, such as the ability to see auras). I was greatly disappointed by the structure of the book which is filled with anecdotal information and very little actual instruction.

The author states that his technique even works with photographs, but instead of decent photos which might give one the opportunity to actually understand what he is talking about, the reader is given a series of poor quality black and white drawings that are more confusing than enlightening. He missed a great opportunity to utilize the photos of dead pop stars, or other public figures to illustrate what he is talking about.

But I think the straw that really made me snap and almost throw the book across the room was when he failed to describe what he calls the Life Moisture Indicator. In his terms, this is an indicator that gives some insight as to a person's general state of health and whether they are likely to survive a serious health crisis or not. He mentions it over and over in the book but does not describe it at all. If there was one thing in his technique that has real value this is it, but the reader is given no hint as to what he is seeing.

The book left me with the feeling that he had written it as a tease to get people to sign up for Kortum Technique training courses.

Original, challenging, seminal, confusing

I am not a health care professional. I read this book because I am acquainted with the author. He was a facilitator at two week-long seminars I attended years ago. I was impressed by his vitality and independent thinking. I am convinced of his sincerity, integrity and intelligence.

The book addresses two principal topics: the clinical application of observable health indicators to diagnose illnesses and the metaphysical explanation of the indicators. The author recounts how he tested and further articulated health indicators within the framework of a clinical trial. His explanation of the basis for the indicators is metaphysical although he does not use that word and in fact argues that it is physical. The blending of vision and feeling (kinetic sense of touch) cannot be explained by current physics (sense of touch requires physical contact), but I believe that the two senses can in fact be combined as the author has done.

I am not competent to evaluate the author's technique. However, I think this book will be attractive to those perceptive health professionals who already quietly practice intuitive medical diagnosis as an aid to mainstream diagnosis techniques. This book will encourage them to further develop their skills. As the author points out, this is not a book of healing techniques except that implicitly the search for the root cause of illness may reveal the cure as well.

This book may appeal to readers who are intent on investigating their senses and consciousness beyond normal bounds. The author provides an example of birthing and nurturing a new tool of perception. The metaphysical ideas are not new, but the author's discovery and personalization of ancient ideas is inspiring. To truly understand fundamental ideas we must individually create them anew within our own unique environment. The author has done this in a manner that enriches us all.

The book concludes with the author's account of his own seemingly intractable malady and his struggle to find its root cause. Ironically, there was no straightforward application of visual health indicators, or clear dialog with affected organs, or standard medical tests to solve the mystery. A protracted process of self-examination was required. I did not understand most of the author's self-revelations and transformation, but I was impressed by his persistence and honesty.

Bottom line: this book is an ennobling example of the author creating a new path that others can follow to better health and potentially much more.

Excellent Book

I rate John's book five stars partly based upon the simplicity of his technique. I know him as a facilitator of the renowned Monroe Institute, where he coaches others in accessing various levels of consciousness. The Kortum Technique (KT) does not require practitioners to use equipment, report back in channeled states or to prepare for months to do what comes naturally to many people. In addition to describing the history of his method and providing real life examples, he tells what the root causes are of some diseases. This would make readers question what in their backgrounds could be released to attain healthier futures. For example, excezyma may be an indication of self-loathing, so sufferers of this ailment may look at the psychological causes.

In addition, he provides Indicator Assessment Forms (checklist of questions). As a follower of holistic medicine for my pets and for myself, I appreciate that he suggests alternative therapies. For all of you with e-readers, I read his book on my iPad, and found nuances within the diagrams to be distinguishable from one another. Eg. The illustrations'shadings to indicate first, second or third degree of dis-ease progression were clear. Enjoy KT as much as I did!
