Scientific Feuds: From Galileo to the Human Genome Project, by Joel Levy

Most science chronicles present a triumphant march through time, with revolutionary thinkers and their discoveries following in orderly progression. The truth, however, is somewhat different. Scientific Feuds is a collection of the most vicious battles among the greatest minds of our time. It features such contests as Huxley and Wilberforce's debate on Darwin's theory of evolution, Franklin and Wilkins' fight over the discovery of DNA, and the “War of Currents” between Tesla and Edison (which ended with Edison electrocuting dogs and horses in a vain attempt to discredit Tesla's work). From passionate competition to vindictive sniping, these rivalries prove that the world of science is far from cold and methodical.

Good light summer read
By Donald E. Fulton
You can tell from the title and cover that this book does not take itself too seriously. Levy here has done a good job assembling a fun, light summer read. It's a big book, colorful with a lot of nice pictures, and its cheap! List is $14.95, but it can be had for around $10.

Nearly all of the 26 topics chosen are important, and at one time or another most of these disputes got a lot of press, so much of this material will be familiar to technical people, still I think almost everyone will find some interesting new material here. For example I knew nothing about the disputes Freud had had with Jung and Adler in the early 1900's, the subject of two of the articles. I was unaware that Montagnier and Gallo, who I remember battled over credit for discovering the HIV retrovirus, are now friends, but only Montagnier was included in the Nobel prize. Or polio vacine guys, Sabin and Salk, do you remember which used the killed virus and which the weakened? Levy has read up on these 26 cases and generally does a good job giving a pithy and even handed summary of the dispute in a few pages, and when helpful he includes a timeline.

The disputes are grouped into four categories:
1) Earth Sciences
2) Evolution and Palaeobiology
3) Biology and Medicine
4) Physics, Astronomy and Math

Most articles start with unlabeled picture/portrait of the disputants. I finally figured that a dispute titled A vs B has A's picture left and B's right. But sometimes there is still portrait uncertainty. For example the article on who invented fingerprints for criminal identification is titled Faulds vs Galston and Herschel. There are two portraits. The left I presume is Faulds, but who is the man on the right, Galston or Herschel?

I think this book should be three stars, but as the only other reviewer gave it two stars I am giving it four to raise the average to three.

Thought-provoking look at the human element in scientific controversies
By E. Jaksetic
The ideal of dispassionate objectivity in scientific research exists in tension with the reality that scientific research is conducted by fallible human beings who exhibit a wide range of different personalities, emotions, and personal interests. This book provides a thought-provoking look at how the personalties, emotions, and personal interests of scientific researchers can threaten the ideal of dispassionate scientific research. The author discusses 26 disputes in the history of science to show how the ideal of dispassionate objectivity occasionally has been forgotten, ignored, or blatantly abandoned by some researchers determined to promote their theories, attack opposing theories, seek personal fame, or vilify opponents.

The book is too brief and episodic to provide a thorough or scholarly history of contentious scientific disputes. Furthermore, the author occasionally lapses into bare speculation and undocumented surmise about the motives and thought processes of some of the disputants he discusses. However, the book does provide an interesting perspective on the history of science.

Readers interested in other books about how personalities, emotions, and personal interests can affect the history of medicine, mathematics, and technology might consider also taking a look at Dana Mackenzie, The Universe in Zero Words: The Story of Mathematics as Told through Equations; F. Gonzalez-Crussi, A Short History of Medicine (Modern Library Chronicles); and Robert V. Bruce, Lincoln and the Tools of War. And, readers interested in how rhetoric and argumentation have played a role in the history of science might consider also taking a look at Jeanne Fahnestock, Rhetorical Figures in Science.

Scientific feuds - good value
By William P. Palmer
Review of `Scientific feuds from Galileo to the human genome project' by Joel Levy in 2010 published by New Holland Publishers of London.

Reviewed by Dr W. P. Palmer

"Scientific feuds from Galileo to the human genome project" is what might be called a coffee table book. Looking at the pricing is instructive as paperback editions are more expensive than the hardback edition, said to be available at $2.02 new or used. It is the hardback edition that is being reviewed here. I have some criticisms of the book, but it is certainly good value at this price. The book is 224 pages long, nicely printed, with twenty-six feuds and eight features considered in very short attractively illustrated articles. A feature is used here to mean a generalized theme, such as `fraud in science' and `science and politics', which add to the books general usefulness. My dictionary defines a feud as `lasting mutual hostility' and the feuds chosen all seem to fit this definition.

Most articles contain a diagrammatic timeline summarizing the times when various events took place and these are useful. The criticism must be the lack of depth, but there is a broad sweep of science covered worldwide from the fourteenth century to the present day. The purpose of the book is to interest a wider audience than just those already interested in science's fascinating history. I enjoyed the rival publication is "Great Feuds in Science" by Hal Hellman subtitled, "Ten of the liveliest disputes ever" (already reviewed by this reviewer), where article length averaged twenty pages, but this too was criticized by others as being insufficiently detailed. For those of us who want more depth about a particular dispute, perhaps about Newton, with three of his feuds given some prominence in this book, there are numerous options such as "Never at Rest: A Biography of Isaac Newton" by Richard S. Westfall, "Isaac Newton" by James Gleick, or "Isaac Newton" by Gale E. Christianson amongst many alternatives.

The hope and purpose of books like "Scientific feuds" is that it will interest some readers sufficiently to become motivated enough to tackle some of the deeper `history of science' literature. For value and presentation, this book is recommended.

Six Bridges : The Legacy of Othmar H. Ammann, by Darl Rastorfer

Othmar Ammann's name may be unfamiliar, but the six magnificent New York City bridges he created are known to all: George Washington, Bayonne, Triborough, Bronx-Whitestone, Throgs Neck, and Verrazano-Narrows. Ammann's long-span bridges came to define an epoch and shape the modern New York metropolis. This book is the first to examine the genius of Ammann and the special group of bridges he designed and engineered as part of the New York region's interstate highway system. With more than 200 archival photographs, the book vividly displays the physical transformation of New York, the development of long-span suspension structures, the construction process of each bridge, and the spectacular completed bridges. Widely considered the greatest American bridge designer of the twentieth century, Swiss-born Ammann (1879-1965) gained experience designing railroad bridges in Pennsylvania before beginning his work in New York City. This book considers the artistic, scientific, and technical achievements embodied in the six major bridges Ammann produced between 1925 and 1964, as well as the bridges' impact on the city. The book features an illustrated and annotated list of all Ammann's built and unbuilt projects and a glossary of technical terms.

From Booklist
"It is a crime to build an ugly bridge," said Othmar Ammann, and the first span he built as an independent engineer, New York's George Washington Bridge, was among the elegant bridges recounted in Henry Petroski's fine Engineers of Dreams (1995). This handsome album summarizes Ammann's career and exhibits 200 photographs and design drawings of his principal achievements: the GW Bridge, the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge, the Throgs Neck Bridge, the Triborough Bridge, the Bayonne Bridge, and the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. Rastorfer's text provides the political context (especially the muscle of public works czar Robert Moses) surrounding the creation of these distinctive elements of New York's skyline, but Rastorfer is more enthused about Ammann's management of these bridges' construction and his contribution to their unique engineering elements and overall aesthetic. The black-and-white images exalt the artistic aspects of the bridges, proclaiming their beauty and vitality to the life of the city, while commemorating their immigrant Swiss designer. Master craftsman
By Yaakov (James) Mosher
I'd like to take this opportunity to "thank" Othmar Ammann for creating the main object in my worst nightmare - The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge (the nightmare involves getting a flat tire while traveling the upper deck). It's good to face your fears and Darl Rastorfer's fine book "Six Bridges: The Legacy of Othmar H. Ammann" enabled me to face mine in the least threatening way possible. The book would be an excellent addition to any coffee table or a keeper in the car for when you're getting a tire replaced.
"Six Bridges" is actually a concise history of bridge building in the United States with no shortage of drama including Ammann's investigative leadership of the Tacoma (Washington) Narrows collapse, which still ripples through the civil engineering world today.
Swiss-born Ammann became the greatest long suspension bridge designer and master craftsman. Rastorfer uses Swiss-like economy in taking us through the engineer's four-decade career from his first design submission for the George Washington Bridge in 1924 to the opening of the Verrazano in 1964. We learn that Ammann wanted to return to Switzerland more than once but destiny repeatedly intervened with project challenges growing in tandem with his reputation.
The author neatly rivets together personal and technical information, creating a sturdy and handsome edifice. Nuances showing in the personal demonstrate Ammann's deep-seated entrepreneurship including parting ways with mentor Gustav Lindenthal when Lindenthal refused to climb down off his giantism in contemplating a Hudson River crossing. Ammann's close relationship with New Jersey Gov. George Silzer gave the engineer courage to break with Lindenthal, Rastorfer notes (p. 25). Another ally and collaborator was the main character of the book "Power Broker: Robert Moses and the Fall of New York." Lots of nuance to pick through in that fellow's legacy.
Ammann joined the Port Authority of New York in 1925, the year he became a U.S. citizen. Offspring from that period include the Bayonne Bridge and Lincoln Tunnel. Years before the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey got its official name it existed in the person of Othmar Ammann.
Interesting that Ammann's early career was spent connecting New York and New Jersey and his later works involved better connecting parts of New York City. Logically, you would have expected the reverse. Not surprising at all upon learning what bridge building, the auto industry and that "Power Broker" guy with his highways created in the Five Boroughs after World War II. "Build it and they will come" comes to mind.
The Verrazano-Narrows is just as likely to confound sociologists as civil engineers. After his "muscular" Throgs Neck Bridge triumph, what did Ammann have left to prove? Rastorfer nails it using the engineer's own words - to create "an enormous object drawn as faintly as possible" (p. 138). We come to learn that the Empire State Building is a toothpick compared to the long-span Louisville Slugger hewn by Ammann. New York should be called The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge State but that doesn't fit on a license plate.
Our author scales the heights through compelling photos and prose summarizing the 12-year effort. We meet Hard Nose Murphy and the fearless "Boomers." My conservative nose got rankled by the demolition that forever changed Bay Ridge, Brooklyn (might as well call it "Bay Bridge" now) and management stalling on putting up netting after three workers fell to their deaths. Netting went up after unionized workers walked off the job (wonder if that would happen today) and four workers were saved by the netting. As Gay Talese does in his book "The Bridge," Rastorfer enables the back-stage heroes to take a bow.
Ammann must have been grateful for G-d creating men able to laugh in the face of vertigo. The crewmen must have been glad for a master craftsman that used each project to create another world engineering benchmark. Rastorfer has recorded their achievements, which some of us drive by or on unthinkingly every day, in such a memorable way.
Hopefully, the 65th anniversary of the creation of Ammann & Whitney, Consulting Engineers (which occurred when Ammann and partner C.C. Combs joined forces with reinforced concrete design pioneer Charles Whitney) will be marked in some way this year. When that occurs we should reexamine the pillars of Ammann's work - shining like the towers of one of his bridges. Like an Ammann design both will surprise upon close inspection - 1) Bridge engineering is NOT an exact science (p. 38) and 2) "It is a crime to build an ugly bridge" (p. 35). Given these, how was Ammann able to create an unbroken chain of success? See the end of Chapter 1 for the master craftsman's humble and surprising answer.

A Great 20th Century Bridge Engineer's Work
By Thomas Ammann
"Six Bridges - The Legacy of Othmar H. Ammann by Darl Rastorfer is a very well written book about a great 20th Century engineer and his engineering feats in long span suspension bridges. This is a must read for everyone for it reveals the trials and tribulations of a man who made history by using scientific principles to design world record breaking bridges.
With his European education Ammann sought out a dream to come to America and seek opportunities in the new country. Within two weeks he started his first position. The early years of Othmar Ammann's career are clearly outlined showing how he gained his knowledge with diligence in various career positions. His thoroughness and dedication to hard work is demonstrated by the trust, faith and confidence of the people who hired him. His reputation was building.
I enjoyed the stories which tell of his character building during hard times also. After his plans for a bridge challenged his future with an employer, he was able to move on and demonstrate his convictions with successful accomplishments. Interesting political considerations are also profiled in the important decisions of costly construction and pressures from public opinion. Ammann's skill to work with people results in many obstacles being overcome.
When the trials and tribulations of office competition evoled, Ammann had the fortitude to break away and start anew. He was a man of visions and had dreams to fulfill. He was a man of principles and nothing could sway him. He was confident his engineering background and skills could lay a path of successful bridge design and construction.
No other bridge engineer has influenced one city more than O.H. Ammann. The history of the planning stages of the designing and construction of these six bridges is well written and interesting for all readers. These six bridges: Georg Washington, Bayonne, Triborough, Bronx-Whitestone, Throngs Neck, and Verrazano-Narrows all are beautifully photographed. A chapter for each bridge outlines their construction with great description and many breathtaking photographs. If you have never been to New York Ctiy this author will certainly take you there with beautiful photos and interesting, informative narrative. Another book including O.H. Ammann's life is: Henry Petrosky's - "Engineers of Dreams: Great Bridge Builders"

Not just for Engineers: A Love-song to New York City Bridges
By A Customer
This book is as special to New Yorkers as it is to Engineering Enthusiasts. As New Yorker in Exile, I now live a life where if I traverse one major bridge a year, it's an event. When I lived in New York City (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and Stane Island at various times), the crossing of these major Bridges was a daily event. Not a day went by when I didn't listen to the Traffic reports and have to quickly calculate my Commute strategy in order to choose the most efficient Span to cross. When going Upstate to visit the parents, I often crossed The Whitestone, Throgsneck or Tri-borough if traffic was too congested in Manhattan. Sometimes, I'd cross the Verrazano, The Brooklyn and the George Washington. This book honours the creation of the modern bridges, their design, construction, completion and functionality as well as describing the political and economic climate in which they were conceived and completed. It answers many of the passing questions that came to my Driving Mind as I stalled in traffic at the Tolls of these Bridges and it brings back memories of my life in the City of Islands. As I mentioned in the title of this review, while kinda technical and history-laden, this is a love song to the Bridges of New York City. Buy it, read it and you'll learn to be grateful for living in a time when these bridges ease travel and not curse them as I used to do occaisonally during Jams. Before reading this book, I never bothered to imagine New York before them and now I appreciate them all the much more.

A Great Book which will change your child's life for the better
By Gavin Bollard
This is quite an unusual book. It's not a practical guide to handling day to day issues with Autism, nor is it a dry clinical description of Autism. It's essentially a book promoting a new paradigm, (a whole new outlook) on Autism. It provides you with an understanding of some key positive concepts and then goes on to show how they can be put into practical use on a daily basis.

I feel that this book could be better described with the considerably less catchy title of; Ten concepts which your future happy and successful grown up child with autism needs you to know, understand, believe and "live" now - in order to ensure that the time line works out for the best.

Make no mistake, these aren't ten baby concepts which will only hold true for a small part of your child's life. They're adult ones, mantras for living - and they apply forever.

The book starts with a list of the 10 things which I'll list below because there are no surprises here.

1. I am a whole child.
2. My senses are out of sync
3. Distinguish between won't and can't
4. I am a concrete thinker, I interpret language literally
5. Listen to all the ways I'm trying to communicate
6. Picture this! I am visually orientated
7. Focus and build on what I can do rather than what I can't do
8. Help me with social interactions
9. Identify what triggers my meltdowns
10. Love me unconditionally.

You'll notice that every one of these ten things is open-ended. Each topic contains a lot of important discussion material. I won't say that I agreed 100% with everything but the later chapters put all of my minor niggles to rest. Ellen makes it clear at the beginning of the book that all children are different and that not everything here will apply to every child.

This book spends quite a bit of time discussing the "language of autism" as it used by parents, media and support personnel. It makes it very clear that the way in which we express, embrace and encourage our children has monumental impact both on their self esteem and their future success. Often we use negative language without realising it and the book provides some handy hints on how to detect and remove these negative words from our daily interactions.

If you've ever used a phrase like "my child suffers from autism", then you really need to read this book. Similarly, if you've said; "my child will never do that".

The subject of the book is Ellen's son Bryce and by reading between the lines, you can follow his journey from a child seen as a PIA (Potentially Independent Adult) to a fully functional, self-supporting adult.

There are some wonderful "bonus chapters" in the book including; "Ten things I want my high school senior with Autism to know" and a great chapter called Evolution which really presses home the problems of limiting language. Finally, the book ends with some discussion questions which are really worth thinking about.

If it all sounds really technical, don't worry, it's not. In fact, it's quite an easy read at just under 200 pages and a really easy-going font but it's a book that will get you thinking and it's a book that could change your life. It probably should be required reading for all parents of children on the spectrum.

By Cari Noga
I particularly loved the chapters on understanding meltdowns and "can't" vs. "won't" as behavioral causes and got this book from the library for my mother (ASD son's grandma) to read. She then ordered her own copy. I think this book has helped him gain another ally. It requires some faith to use these techniques, and I don't know that I would use them exclusively, but it's an excellent Autism 101, especially good to suggest to family/friends/teachers who don't live with it 24-7.

Changed My Outlook and Helped Me Heal
By The Yellow House
I feel this is an excellent primer for those new to autism, especially those who are still struggling to understand if the behavior they see is identifiable. Our 5-year old son has recently been diagnosed with high-functioning autism, and I bought this book not only for myself, but for his grandparents. His grandmother read the book before coming to stay with my husband for a week while I was out of town, and it helped her immensely. It helps to give you a sense of empathy rather than just frustration when your child acts they way they do; consequently changing how you react to it (I'm much better able to be patient now that I understand that he is struggling to work his way through situations just as hard as I am). While I learned a significant amount of important basics, just as important is that I walked away with a sense of hope, which was incredibly healing for me as I emotionally wrestled with my feelings after the diagnosis. The author shares her experience with her own son, the highs and the lows; and later editions have epilogues in the back with updates on her child who is now a functional, happy, independent adult. While this does not mean that every child will turn out as well-adjusted, at least you feel as though it might actually be possible, instead of being consumed with nightmare scenarios of them as an adult.
Another important component in the book is her careful analysis of the language we use to describe people with autism and how much damage it can (and does) do - not only to the psyche of the adult, but also the child, and the world at large (this is such a stigmatized condition, which was part of my struggle when I heard the news - I thought I knew what autism was. I did not). Phrases such as "suffer from autism" for example, are unhelpful and give the wrong impression about a child's daily existence. As another reviewer (who has autism) touches on, even high profile, helpful advocate organizations such as Autism Speaks infer that there is something "lesser-than" about those with autism, by referring to "finding the missing piece of the puzzle" (which is also illustrated in their logo). From this book I realized my son is not missing any pieces, he is just a more complicated puzzle to fit together (and all children are puzzles in their own way, really). While it is true, as several other reviewers have mentioned, there are not many specific strategies other than making you aware of what's going on in an autistic child's brain and how they perceive the world, I don't think this book is meant for that. It is a personalized viewpoint from a mother who has worked her way through this with her own child, and the things she learned that can apply to your child (and you) as well. *Specific* strategies come from therapy, as every child is different, and will need slightly different guidance and help. There's no "one-size-fits-all" remedy (although if you are looking for some basic strategies as well as ideas for how to help your child on an on-going, daily basis, I am finding "1001 Great Ideas for Teaching and Raising Children with Asperger's and Autism" to be helpful).
This book literally changed my way of thinking about the future and about my son, and as a mom staring down a new, uncertain, long and winding road, I am very, very grateful.

Wayward One, by Lorelie Brown

He’ll protect her with every vicious bone in his body.

During her ten years at the prestigious Waywroth Academy, Sera Miller clung to a strict code of propriety to shield herself from rumors that she isn’t an orphan at all. She’s a bastard. Now she wishes she had never allowed her friends to talk her into snooping into the mysterious source of her tuition.

Her benefactor isn’t the unknown father she dreamed of one day meeting, but Fletcher Thomas—underworld tycoon, gambling den owner, and a man so dangerously mesmerizing that he could spark the scandal Sera has worked so hard to avoid.

Fletcher is only two steps away from leaving the life of crime he inherited from his father. First he plans to join an aboveboard railroad consortium, then claim the one thing his ill-gotten gains have kept safe all these years—Sera.

With every wicked caress, Sera fights harder to remember society’s rules and reject the painful memories his touch resurrects. Accepting Fletcher’s love means accepting her past—a risk too great for a woman who has always lived in the shadows. No matter how safe she feels in his arms.

Warning: This book contains a do-gooder heroine, an accidentally charming hero with tendencies toward caveman-itis, inappropriate household décor and fabulous sex against a wall.

“Take a little Cinderella, add in some Beauty and the Beast, and the result is Brown’s sexy tale…Add in an excellent secondary cast and a great story, and the result is outstanding.”

About the Author
After a semi-nomadic childhood throughout California, Lorelie Brown spent high school in Orange County before joining the US Army. After traveling the world from South Korea to Italy, she’s returned home to California. But not the cool area. She can’t afford that yet. Lorelie has three active sons and a tiny shih-tzu who thinks he’s son number three—not four, he’s too important to be the baby. Writing romance helps her escape a house full of testosterone. In her immense free time (hah!) Lorelie co-writes contemporary erotic romance under the name Katie Porter.

Lose Yourself in this wonderful book...

Book exchanged for an honest review

Seraphina (Sera) Miller has known life as the poorest of the poor. Sera has been given the opportunity to be groomed into a lady at Waywroth Academy. Sera is every inch the lady in Fletcher Thomas's eyes. Fletcher has been secretly given Sera the opportunities she wouldn't have otherwise. Fletcher and Sera knew each other as children but Fletcher has never forgotten her. Sera hopes to get a job at Waywroth Academy as one of the teachers. When Fletcher learns of Sera plans he moves to change them fast. Fletcher hopes to make himself suitable to society by going legit. He's been working hard to make that happen but he's missing something valuable Sera. Sera sees the disaster that Fletcher's home is in and moves mountains to fix everything that is wrong. Sera helps Fletcher see how out of control things are in his home. Rick Raverst doesn't like the idea of Fletcher going to legit. He especially doesn't like Sera because of how she influences Fletcher's behavior. Fletcher has be trying to get into Lord Linsley's railroad consortium for a very long time. Fletcher surprises Sera with her mother's locket and touch by his thoughtfulness. Will Sera let Fletcher into her heart? Can Fletcher admit his feelings and dreams to Sera? What does Rick Raverst fear? Will Lord Linsley admit Fletcher into the railroad consortium? What is special about the locket? Your answers await you in Wayward One.

Wayward One is the most aptly named book title I've seen in a while. From beginning to end this book rocked as a page turner that you had to know what happened next. I was constantly telling myself just one more page and chapter through out the whole book. Historial romance novels have always been a favorite genre of mine since I could read Harlequin novels. I loved all of the characters presented but I have to admit that Sera's character is my favorite. Sera's personality of having to control everything in her life is so relatable to modern times and families. Every plot point and mystery only added to the fun of reading this book. I will continue reading this genre and author's works. I look forward to the next work presented by this author.

Oh Wow!!!

I am so happy I am done reading this story. The heroine was super annoying and she whined about everything. She wanted to be the perfect ton marriage and so she set out to change the hero and his household to be correct when he is a criminal. He bent over backwards to make sure she was provided for her whole life and she can show some appreciation for it but she doesn't. She was the worst thing about this story and the hero was not the best but he at least deserved a better heroine. I would not have waited for her all those years if I was him.

A story that kept you turning the pages.

"A story that kept you turning the pages." ~Under the Covers

WAYWARD ONE is a different historical romance than what I've been reading lately, and I mean that in a good way. It's a bit darker storyline without really being dark. This book, although unexpected for me, was a good mix of sexy and emotion with an interesting storyline. A story that kept you turning the pages.

Our hero, Fletcher Thomas, is a man who has made his fortune by not so traditional means (ie underworld) and he's not necessarily a respected member of London society. Sera Miller has grown up at a boarding school, knowing she was an orphan, and without knowing who her benefactor was. She's now the epitome of proper. Sometimes way too much for my liking.

Fletcher finally reveals himself as Sera's benefactor and the true reason why he was doing it was very romantic. See, Sera's mother used to be Fletcher's fathers' "lady of the night" and, as kids, Fletcher and Sera spent time together. One could say he fell in love then and always wanted to take care of her. And that's what he's been doing for years, from afar. That is until she would be of age and he could snatch her up and marry her. In his mind, she could make him better.

I really liked Fletcher, he's the good bad guy. He's wanted so bad to fit in and to be part of society that he doesn't quite understand it really isn't all that's cracked up to be, nor that it may not be a good fit for him.

The connection between Fletcher and Sera was a bit lacking at first for me but it slowly developed and when I wasn't wanting to club her to snap out of her tidy ways, then they were actually fun together. There's nothing better than seeing the oh-so-proper Sera get all hot and bothered in the most inappropriate places because she couldn't fight her attraction to Fletcher.

There's even a bit of action in this book adding a nice layer to the story. There's the issue of Sera's mother and Fletcher's fathers' death. We get to find out the truth about that and how this was still affecting their lives today.

I am extremely happy I gave this book a try. I've loved the author's work while being one half of Katie Porter and wasn't sure how that would relate to her historicals. This is not a Katie Porter book, I was happy to see a distinct voice coming through WAYWARD ONE. But at the same time, I'll definitely have another author that I need to read from now on.

A wide ranging and informative book. four stars because he does not know all the "wrinkles" that i do and some of the maths is there to impress. so saying, written by someone who knows and loves their subject. i would not be without the book because i enjoy reading it.

i read a little bit more every day: i even learn something.

Buy a copy if you love the subject.

The Boy Who Invented TV: The Story of Philo Farnsworth, by Kathleen Krull

An inspiring true story of a boy genius.

Plowing a potato field in 1920, a 14-year-old farm boy from Idaho saw in the parallel rows of overturned earth a way to “make pictures fly through the air.” This boy was not a magician; he was a scientific genius and just eight years later he made his brainstorm in the potato field a reality by transmitting the world’s first television image. This fascinating picture-book biography of Philo Farnsworth covers his early interest in machines and electricity, leading up to how he put it all together in one of the greatest inventions of the 20th century. The author’s afterword discusses the lawsuit Farnsworth waged and won against RCA when his high school science teacher testified that Philo’s invention of television was years before RCA’s.

From School Library Journal
Starred Review. Grade 2–5—Endpapers featuring a photo collage of generations of televisions from the earliest oval-screened version to modern flat screens set the book's context. Then, readers are asked to imagine life when there was no TV, radio was only for the military, news was hard to come by, and people studied the Sears, Roebuck catalog to make their purchases. Juxtaposing the staid images of farm life with fanciful ones depicting Farnsworth's broadening vision, Couch draws, paints, and digitally enhances the story. To show the boy learning about inventors as he studies the stars, Thomas Edison and Alexander Graham Bell appear among the constellations like ancient Greek heroes. While plowing a field, Farnsworth developed the idea for how television could work, inspired by those parallel furrows as a format to transmit an electronic signal. It is the inventor's passion and genius that come through in this picture-book biography that follows him from the three-year-old who drew schematics of train engines, to the teen who automated the clothes washer so he would have more time to read, to the young man who celebrated his invention. Krull's focus is on the boy genius becoming an inventor like his heroes, and only in a note does she mention his struggles with RCA and his bitterness later in life. The facts aren't new, but with Krull building the story and Couch's exceptional images, it's one to inspire young audiences with the vast possibilities that imagination and diligence can accomplish.—Janet S. Thompson, Chicago Public Library END

Philo Farnsworth's story is incredible and inspiring!
By Z Hayes
I had to read several biographies written for a young audience as part of an assignment for graduate school and came across this title. It was an interesting and riveting read, especially so considering I had never even heard of Philo Farnsworth!

This inspiring picture book biography recounts the true life story of Philo Taylor Farnsworth, who was just a 14-year-old farmboy in 1920 when he had a brainstorm. Seeing the plow create rows of overturned earth, Philo found a way to create television by "breaking down images into parallel lines of light, capturing them and transmitting them as electrons, then reassembling them for a viewer." His school teacher, Mr. Tolman encouraged him to go to college where he thought Philo's genius would be given the recognition it deserved. Unfortunately, events would conspire against Philo. He was forced to leave college after his father's death and became his family's main breadwinner.

It was only eight years after his brilliant idea first came to Philo's mind that he was able to realize his dream of transmitting the world's first television image. The book ends at this point though the author's note at the back of the book mentions how Philo triumphed in his bid to invent TV but would not get credit for it during his lifetime. Philo was embroiled in a dispute with the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) and never did get actual credit for inventing the television, especially since his patents expired and his ideas became public domain. It is an inspiring tale that will serve to fire young people's imaginations and motivate them to invent. Philo Farnsworth has finally received the acknowledgment and recognition denied to him all those years ago.

This is the story of one of the greatest inventors of the twentieth century! Have you ever heard of Philo Farnsworth?
By Deb
Philo Farnsworth was an inquisitive boy who had been interested in “anything mechanical” since he was a very small boy. Trains, telephones and phonographs were wondrous and magical inventions that excited and stirred his imagination. It was a passion that his father shared with him. He told his son about Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell and their inventions. When his father was temporarily away on a work assignment, Philo, at the tender age of eight, was left in charge of the family. Perhaps as a result, he grew more mature than others his age. Bullies had a tendency to tease him because of his unusual name, but he turned away from them.

He enjoyed reading his grandmother’s Sears, Roebuck catalog and marveling over “cameras, alarm clocks, and machines that used a new, invisible source of power” called electricity. The most he got out of the catalog was a violin at the insistence of his grandmother, which tended to give more fodder for the bullies. There was something about this electricity business and the elusive “television” scientists were working on. Philo’s mind never seemed to stop thinking about it. Wait . . . there was something about the plowed “rows of dirt” that turned a switch on in his fourteen-year-old mind. Was this the solution the scientists had been looking for to make pictures “fly through the air?”

This was a fascinating story of a young man who was nudged out and almost forgotten even though he invented “one of the greatest inventions of the twentieth century.” I loved the way the story was told because it gave great insight into Philo’s character and why he was not credited with his invention. The artwork was very “period” looking and quite appealing. The end papers are filled with a large variety of television sets that span the ages. This book is a Junior Library Guild Selection that both old and young alike will enjoy!

A Role Modle for Determination
By JessieJessJess
The Boy Who Invented TV: The Story of Philo Farnsworth by Kathleen Krull and illustrated by Greg Couch is yet another wonderful picture book about a young man having the courage to continue and solving science before anyone else! Farnsworth went through his daily life always wondering how the world worked. Philo Farnsworth, the young inventor, develops and then discovers how to transmit images electronically, while plowing the fields, which leads to the invention of the first TV. With the help of his wife, Philo gets his wife to be the first person on TV. The book is a wonderful book that shows courage of a young boy from a young age of three all the way up to a young married man, imagining, creating, and having the will to continue no matter how many people were negative and those who didn't have faith for him. This book is an encouraging book for young readers to continue on their determinations no matter how negative people can be.

Columella: On Agriculture, Volume I, Books I-IV (Loeb Classical Library No. 361), by Columella

Columella (Lucius Iunius Moderatus) of Gades (Cadiz) lived in the reigns of the first emperors to about 70 CE. He moved early in life to Italy where he owned farms and lived near Rome. It is probable that he did military service in Syria and Cilicia and that he died at Tarentum.

Columella's On Agriculture (De Re Rustica) is the most comprehensive, systematic and detailed of Roman agricultural works. Book I covers choice of farming site; water supply; buildings; staff. II: Ploughing; fertilising; care of crops. III, IV, V: Cultivation, grafting and pruning of fruit trees, vines, and olives. VI: Acquisition, breeding, and rearing of oxen, horses, and mules; veterinary medicine. VII: Sheep, goats, pigs, and dogs. VIII: Poultry; fish ponds. IX: Bee-keeping. X (in hexameter poetry): Gardening. XI: Duties of the overseer of a farm; calendar for farm work; more on gardening. XII: Duties of the overseer's wife; manufacture of wines; pickling; preserving. There is also a separate treatise, Trees (De Arboribus), on vines and olives and various trees, perhaps part of an otherwise lost work written before On Agriculture.

The Loeb Classical Library edition of Columella is in three volumes.
