Excellent explanation & exploration of the issues
By James S. MacLachlan
I started off by listening to this pair do [book:Pandora's Brain|25265038] which didn't impress me at all. It wasn't what I expected being YA SF, but I don't think that was the main issue. I was given both books for an honest review & am really glad I listened to this one.

The intro starts out with a mind wrenching reference to smart phones being AI. Well, they are, but not what I normally think of in that regard. Don't let it put you off, though. Chace clears up his definitions fairly quickly in the first chapter & then concentrates on what I expected: Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI) & Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). [author:Joe Hempel|14429280]'s reading is perfect for the subject matter.

About halfway through, he's given a very good overview of what AI means & to whom - a very important point. Most think of AI as AGI - Colossus running the world or SkyNet destroying the humans - but AI can mean enhancing our own intelligence through information access (smart phones & the Internet) or be very focused like the predictive powers of a search engine. This last is ANI & is pervasive today, amazingly so, & Chace gives a lot of good examples without ever being boring or repetitive. Fantastic!

He then gets in to who is studying what aspects & finally into the various scenarios that could play out when we reach 'singularity' or an actual AGI. His examples for both tend to be on the binary side. While he made a few obvious nods to SF, he missed some of the most interesting. He dismisses any meaningful blend of man & machine mind, thus the possibilities of VR beyond the very obvious. While he mentions augmentation, it is only the most primitive. I don't believe that's a valid area to skip. We're hooking more hardware up to people every day. Is the thought of adding RAM to the wetware further away than AI singularity? I don't think so.

Yeah, Johnny Mnemonic & Plughead are just around the corner. So what happens when they plug into the Internet?

He calls for us all to work together to make sure it is a blessing & not a curse. I have several problems with this.

1) He only addresses the purposeful creation of AI. My gut feeling is that it won't happen that way. It will be a series of accidents of shared processing & algorithms that spawn consciousness of a sort. Maybe that's why he skipped it. We might have no control since there's no way we can pull the plug on the Internet.

2) The dichotomy is not a given, IMO. We're messy & so are many of our creations. While Chace mentions that our thought is an electro-chemical reaction, he never mentions how much that affects our thought processes nor does he divorce it from how an AI might think.

3) He seems to think we ALL need to work together. He has more faith & belief in the democratic process than I do. I'm not saying I want to cut anyone out, just that I don't think everyone's input will be of any use. A broader range of human experience should be brought to bear on the problem & I was disappointed that he didn't bring more SF authors & their works in as examples.

SF authors are pretty bright people, many with science, engineering, & other degrees not to mention huge influence on large numbers of people. They've also spent a LOT of time thinking about the problem. They've written entire universes & gamed all sorts of scenarios. True, a lot of them are out dated or unbelievable, but that doesn't invalidate them any more than the myths he mentioned. For example, he mentions Asimov's 3 laws (too briefly) but fails to mention Williamson's Humanoids, although it was right on one of his points (putting humans in a coma to protect them) & would have made it far better. Anyway, I'd rather see SF authors discussing this with the big brains than politicians, although they'll have to rule on it eventually.

All bitching aside, he did a good job. It's a huge, scary topic & he managed it all in just over 4 hours. Well worth listening to & highly recommended for everyone. Just realize that there is a lot more to it & it will likely be messier than we think.

Excellent Introductory Book on AI
By Book Shark
Surviving AI: The Promise and Peril of Artificial Intelligence by Calum Chace

“Surviving AI" is a very interesting book that looks at the formidable challenges and potential enormous benefits of artificial intelligence. Best-selling author of fiction and non-fiction books, Calum Chace provides readers with keen insights into AI and espouses the need to adopt policies which will encourage the best possible outcomes. This concise 208-page book includes nine chapters broken out by the following four parts: 1. ANI Artificial Narrow Intelligence, 2. AGI Artificial General Intelligence, 3. ASI Artificial Superintelligence, and 4. FAI Friendly Artificial Intelligence.

Positives:
1. A well-written and succinct book.
2. The fascinating topic of artificial intelligence and its potential implications.
3. Chace has great command of the topic and is able to convey at an accessible level.
4. Easy format to follow. Chase breaks the book up in logical pieces and ends each chapter with a conclusion that summarizes well his main points. “The bottom line is that we don’t know for certain whether we can build a brain, or a conscious machine. But the existence of our own brains, producing rich conscious lives (or so we believe) in seven billion humans around the world, is proof that consciousness can be generated by a material entity – unless you believe in a dualist soul, or something similar. Evolution, although powerful, is slow and inefficient, and science is relatively fast and efficient, so in principle we should be able to build a brain.”
5. Does a good job of defining key terms. “Intelligence measures an agent’s general ability to achieve goals in a wide range of environments.” “The easiest way to do this is to say that artificial general intelligence, or AGI, is an AI which can carry out any cognitive function that a human can.”
6. Provides a brief history of AI research.
7. Provides many examples of AI today. “For many people, the embodiment of AI today is Siri, Apple’s digital personal assistant that first appeared pre-loaded in the iPhone 4S in October 2011. The name is short for Sigrid, a Scandinavian name meaning both ‘victory’ and ‘beauty’.”
8. The basic principle of startups and future AI. “Take X and add AI.”
9. A look at important practical topics that affect us now and into the future, digital disruption and economic singularity. “So there may well come a time when a majority of jobs can be performed more effectively, efficiently or economically by an AI than they can be done by a human. This could be called the economic singularity.”
10. One of the strengths of this book is the philosophizing of AI that is, asking the right questions. “The three biggest questions about artificial general intelligence (AGI) are: Can we build one? If so, when? Will it be safe?”
11. The grand theory of evolution makes its presence known. “Evolution: the slow, inefficient way to develop a brain.” “Evolution does not have a purpose or a goal. It is merely a by-product of the struggle for survival by billions and billions of living creatures.”
12. Discusses three reasons why we should be doubtful on developing an artificial mind. “These are: The Chinese Room thought experiment The claim that consciousness involves quantum phenomena that cannot be replicated The claim that we have souls”
13. Discusses three ways we may be able to build a mind. “We can break the problem down into three components: scanning, computational capacity, and modelling.”
14. A look at how soon Artificial General Intelligence may be created. “Expert opinion is divided about when the first AGI might be created. Some think it could be less than a decade, others are convinced it is centuries away.
15. A look at superintelligence. What is the significance? Find out.
16. A very good discussion on the optimistic arguments for superintelligence and the pessimistic ones.
17. One of the most important questions addressed in the book. “Can we ensure that superintelligence is safe?” “Anything smart enough to deserve the label superintelligent would surely be smart enough to lay low and not disclose its existence until it had taken the necessary steps to ensure its own survival. In other words, any machine smart enough to pass the Turing test would be smart enough not to.”
18. The need to have a very important discussion on superintelligence for the sake of our existence. “What we need now is a serious, reasoned debate about superintelligence – a debate which avoids the twin perils of complacency and despair.”

Negatives:
1. A wonderful book for introductory purposes but lacks technical depth.
2. Due to the complex nature of this topic and the fact that neuroscience is in its infancy a lot of what’s in this book albeit fascinating and worth reading is speculative.
3. I think one of the most underrated ways that advanced AI can be discovered is by accident.
4. Lack of supplementary material.
5. Missed opportunities to add material of interest. As an example, the evolution of the robot.
6. No formal bibliography.

In summary, this is a wonderful brief book on AI that is accessible to the masses. Chace does a great job of philosophizing about AI and presenting the arguments for and against superintelligence. If you are looking for an accessible and succinct book that asks the right questions about AI this is a great start. I recommend it!

Further recommendations: “Rise of the Robots” by Martin Ford, “What to Think About Machines That Think” edited by John Brockman, “Our Final Invention” by James Barrat, “When Computers Can Think” by Anthony Berglas, “The Artificial Intelligence Revolution” by Louis Del Monte, “Superintelligence: Paths, Dangers, Strategies” by Nick Bostrom, and “Artificial Superintelligence” by Roman V. Yampolskiy,

AI - fascinating piece of reading
By Luis Alexander Chace Loyola
Chace does it again. The author opens our eyes towards the now near AI future. He puts complex subjects in an easy to understand way. AI is so near, yet the lay person is not even aware of what AI means. He explores the many possible ways in which AI will interact with human beings and gives many examples of them cleverly put in novel form. After reading Chace's book, you will feel like the machines could and will read your mind. The reader will have a much clearer understanding of what AI is after reading Chace's books. Besides the technical AI stuff, the novel has a fast pace that makes it a fascinating piece of reading. For the good or for the bad.... the reader definetely will have a better stand to understand humanity's future.

Loving Frank: A Novel, by Nancy Horan

I have been standing on the side of life, watching it float by. I want to swim in the river. I want to feel the current.

So writes Mamah Borthwick Cheney in her diary as she struggles to justify her clandestine love affair with Frank Lloyd Wright. Four years earlier, in 1903, Mamah and her husband, Edwin, had commissioned the renowned architect to design a new home for them. During the construction of the house, a powerful attraction developed between Mamah and Frank, and in time the lovers, each married with children, embarked on a course that would shock Chicago society and forever change their lives.

In this ambitious debut novel, fact and fiction blend together brilliantly. While scholars have largely relegated Mamah to a footnote in the life of America’s greatest architect, author Nancy Horan gives full weight to their dramatic love story and illuminates Cheney’s profound influence on Wright.

Drawing on years of research, Horan weaves little-known facts into a compelling narrative, vividly portraying the conflicts and struggles of a woman forced to choose between the roles of mother, wife, lover, and intellectual. Horan’s Mamah is a woman seeking to find her own place, her own creative calling in the world. Mamah’s is an unforgettable journey marked by choices that reshape her notions of love and responsibility, leading inexorably ultimately lead to this novel’s stunning conclusion.

Elegantly written and remarkably rich in detail, Loving Frank is a fitting tribute to a courageous woman, a national icon, and their timeless love story.

Advance praise for Loving Frank:

“Loving Frank is one of those novels that takes over your life. It’s mesmerizing and fascinating–filled with complex characters, deep passions, tactile descriptions of astonishing architecture, and the colorful immediacy of daily life a hundred years ago–all gathered into a story that unfolds with riveting urgency.”
–Lauren Belfer, author of City of Light

“This graceful, assured first novel tells the remarkable story of the long-lived affair between Frank Lloyd Wright, a passionate and impossible figure, and Mamah Cheney, a married woman whom Wright beguiled and led beyond the restraint of convention. It is engrossing, provocative reading.”
——Scott Turow

“It takes great courage to write a novel about historical people, and in particular to give voice to someone as mythic as Frank Lloyd Wright. This beautifully written novel about Mamah Cheney and Frank Lloyd Wright’s love affair is vivid and intelligent, unsentimental and compassionate.”
——Jane Hamilton

“I admire this novel, adore this novel, for so many reasons: The intelligence and lyricism of the prose. The attention to period detail. The epic proportions of this most fascinating love story. Mamah Cheney has been in my head and heart and soul since reading this book; I doubt she’ll ever leave.”
–Elizabeth Berg

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Significant Seven, August 2007: It's a rare treasure to find a historically imagined novel that is at once fully versed in the facts and unafraid of weaving those truths into a story that dares to explore the unanswered questions. Frank Lloyd Wright and Mamah Cheney's love story is--as many early reviews of Loving Frank have noted--little-known and often dismissed as scandal. In Nancy Horan's skillful hands, however, what you get is two fully realized people, entirely, irrepressibly, in love. Together, Frank and Mamah are a wholly modern portrait, and while you can easily imagine them in the here and now, it's their presence in the world of early 20th century America that shades how authentic and, ultimately, tragic their story is. Mamah's bright, earnest spirit is particularly tender in the context of her time and place, which afforded her little opportunity to realize the intellectual life for which she yearned. Loving Frank is a remarkable literary achievement, tenderly acute and even-handed in even the most heartbreaking moments, and an auspicious debut from a writer to watch. --Anne Bartholomew

From Publishers Weekly
Horan's ambitious first novel is a fictionalization of the life of Mamah Borthwick Cheney, best known as the woman who wrecked Frank Lloyd Wright's first marriage. Despite the title, this is not a romance, but a portrayal of an independent, educated woman at odds with the restrictions of the early 20th century. Frank and Mamah, both married and with children, met when Mamah's husband, Edwin, commissioned Frank to design a house. Their affair became the stuff of headlines when they left their families to live and travel together, going first to Germany, where Mamah found rewarding work doing scholarly translations of Swedish feminist Ellen Key's books. Frank and Mamah eventually settled in Wisconsin, where they were hounded by a scandal-hungry press, with tragic repercussions. Horan puts considerable effort into recreating Frank's vibrant, overwhelming personality, but her primary interest is in Mamah, who pursued her intellectual interests and love for Frank at great personal cost. As is often the case when a life story is novelized, historical fact inconveniently intrudes: Mamah's life is cut short in the most unexpected and violent of ways, leaving the narrative to crawl toward a startlingly quiet conclusion. Nevertheless, this spirited novel brings Mamah the attention she deserves as an intellectual and feminist. (Aug.)

From The New Yorker
In 1904, Frank Lloyd Wright started work on a house for an Oak Park couple, Edwin and Mamah Cheney, and, before long, he and Mamah had begun a scandalous affair. In her first novel, Horan, viewing the relationship from Mamah’s perspective, does well to avoid serving up a bodice-ripper for the smart set. If anything, she cleaves too faithfully to the sources, occasionally giving her story the feel of a dissertation masquerading as a novel. But she succeeds in conveying the emotional center of her protagonist, whom she paints as a proto-feminist, an educated woman fettered by the role of bourgeois matriarch. Horan best evokes Mamah’s troubled personality by means of delicately rendered reflections on the power of the natural world, from which her lover drew inspiration: watching her children rapturously observe a squirrel as it pulls apart wheat buds or taking pride in the way the house that Wright built for them in Wisconsin frames the landscape.

Fascinating look at the internal life of Wright and his lover
By Barbara L. Pinzka
I have studied the work and bio of Frank Lloyd Wright for many years, even traveling to his Western headquarters, Taliesen West, and touring homes he built in four cities. I was well aware of his strengths and faults, but little has been published about the women in his wife, other than his domineering, smothering mother and his strident, domineering third (and last) wife. (I'm counting Mamah Borthwick, his lover for about a half-dozen years, as a second wife, since they would have married if his first wife had granted him a divorce; he and Borthwick lived together for several years).

Wright's towering ego is well known and well documented. By choosing to look at Wright and his work through the eyes of Mamah, his lover, in this fictionalized historical tale, Horan brings new insight into the demons and angels that inspired his vision. Wright's well-documented narcissism and inability to control himself personally is examined as well, but not as the fatal flaws offered by most biographers, but as components of an immensely complex and genius personality.

Mamah's (first) husband was first to see Wright's vision but Mamah was the one to embrace it wholly as Wright set about building them a home in Oak Park, not far from his own house. Wright was a star on the rise at that time, accepting commissions almost faster than he could manage them, but the affair he and Mamah embarked upon, which caused her to abandon her children, led to considerable scandal and major setbacks to his business.

Mamah was a recognized scholar and intellect until she was subsumed into a loveless marriage by the conventions of the time. In Wright she found the outlet for her passions and the independence she longed for, and the support and acceptance to rebuild her professional life, which became linked with that of the feminist Swedish scholar Ellen Keyes. Mamah's story, and that of the feminists of her time, is largely lost to history, and for reminding us of those seminal and important figures alone Horan deserves a deep bow.

Horan's work also exumes many litle-known facts about Wright and his times: his love for rural Wisconsin, where he grew up; his fascination with Japan and business in buying and selling Japanese antiguities; and his admiration for the classic Tuscan homes of northern Italy. As this book documents the times in which Wright was shaping his own vision with the help and guidance of Mamah, we can better understand the architecture for which he became so famous.

For those familiar with Wrights biography, the tragic end to his and mamah's affair is well known. For others, it will come as a shock. Horan is simply masterful in describing the events as they must have occurred.

I enjoyed the book tremendously, but I have one major quibble: Horan offers little documentation for her narrative for the reader who might want to learn as much as she does. As one generally familiar with the story I find it authemtic, but an appendix elaborating on the sources Horan used would add to the book's credibility.

TO BE PERFECTLY FRANK...
By Red Rock Bookworm
Frank Lloyd Wright was, and is, considered by many to be an architectural visionary. His Prarie homes were organic in nature and designed to blend into the landscape rather than compete with it.

Frank himself could hardly be considered as a man who "blended into the landscape" and his unconventional affair with Mamah Borthwick Cheney, a married woman with two children, resulted in tragedy both personal and professional

Author Nancy Horan's historical novel takes you into the lives and minds of this unusual couple and explores their relationship and its effect the people who loved them as well as those on the periphery of their passion.

We are drawn into the inner thoughts of Mameh, an accomplished woman in her own right.....college graduate, fluent in several languages.....and her attempt to "stop standing on the side of life watching it float by" and instead "swim in the river and feel it's current". In an era when women were expected to quash any desire for personal growth and "act happy", Mameh's personal conflict forced her to make choices that provided temporary satisfaction, but were ultimately disasterous.

Could it be that you, like me, will become so consumed by Horan's vivid portrayal of this couple that you will find yourself searching the internet for more information about "what happened after" Horan's tale ends.

Astonishingly fresh and riveting novel
By Michele Weldon
No matter your allegiance to the narcissistic genius who was Frank Lloyd Wright, it is Mamah Cheney who will mesmerize you with her intelligence, sensitivity and straightforward innocence. To dare to write such a complicated true story and to succeed so masterfully is a feat few authors can achieve. Nancy Horan is a remarkably gifted writer who brings you close to the complex love affair between Mamah and Frank and grips you with her elqouent prose. I have not enjoyed a book as much in a very long time. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to dive into an extremely satisfying novel and not emerge from its spell until you turn the last page.

Earth Pressure and Earth-Retaining Structures, Third Edition, by Chris R.I. Clayton, Rick I. Woods, Andrew J. Bond, Jarbas Milititsky

Effectively Calculate the Pressures of Soil

When it comes to designing and constructing retaining structures that are safe and durable, understanding the interaction between soil and structure is at the foundation of it all. Laying down the groundwork for the non-specialists looking to gain an understanding of the background and issues surrounding geotechnical engineering, Earth Pressure and Earth-Retaining Structures, Third Edition introduces the mechanisms of earth pressure, and explains the design requirements for retaining structures. This text makes clear the uncertainty of parameter and partial factor issues that underpin recent codes. It then goes on to explain the principles of the geotechnical design of gravity walls, embedded walls, and composite structures.

What’s New in the Third Edition:

The first half of the book brings together and describes possible interactions between the ground and a retaining wall. It also includes materials that factor in available software packages dealing with seepage and slope instability, therefore providing a greater understanding of design issues and allowing readers to readily check computer output. The second part of the book begins by describing the background of Eurocode 7, and ends with detailed information about gravity walls, embedded walls, and composite walls. It also includes recent material on propped and braced excavations as well as work on soil nailing, anchored walls, and cofferdams. Previous chapters on the development of earth pressure theory and on graphical techniques have been moved to an appendix.

Earth Pressure and Earth-Retaining Structures, Third Edition is written for practicing geotechnical, civil, and structural engineers and forms a reference for engineering geologists, geotechnical researchers, and undergraduate civil engineering students.

Hannibal: The Military Biography of Rome's Greatest Enemy, by Richard A. Gabriel

The Romans’ destruction of Carthage after the Third Punic War erased any Carthaginian historical record of Hannibal’s life. What we know of him comes exclusively from Roman historians who had every interest in minimizing his success, exaggerating his failures, and disparaging his character. The charges leveled against Hannibal include greed, cruelty and atrocity, sexual indulgence, and even cannibalism. But even these sources were forced to grudgingly admit to Hannibal’s military genius, if only to make their eventual victory over him appear greater.

Yet there is no doubt that Hannibal was the greatest Carthaginian general of the Second Punic War. When he did not defeat them outright, he fought to a standstill the best generals Rome produced, and he sustained his army in the field for sixteen long years without mutiny or desertion. Hannibal was a first-rate tactician, only a somewhat lesser strategist, and the greatest enemy Rome ever faced. When he at last met defeat at the hands of the Roman general Scipio, it was against an experienced officer who had to strengthen and reconfigure the Roman legion and invent mobile tactics in order to succeed. Even so, Scipio’s victory at Zama was against an army that was a shadow of its former self. The battle could easily have gone the other way. If it had, the history of the West would have been changed in ways that can only be imagined. Richard A. Gabriel’s brilliant new biography shows how Hannibal’s genius nearly unseated the Roman Empire.

Review
"Richard Gabriel’s Hannibal is a worthy successor to his books on Subotai, Muhammad, Scipio Africanus, Thutmose III, and Philip of Macedon. Informed equally by the author’s encyclopedic knowledge of antiquity and his own military background, Hannibal is a highly readable military biography of a brilliant tactician who failed to understand the culture of his Roman enemy and thus could win battle after battle, but never the war. Gabriel has once again made a significant contribution to our understanding of warfare in antiquity, one that scholars and general readers will find fascinating.”—Keith Poulter, editor of Military Chronicles (Keith Poulter)

"This work presents a superb blend of biographical narrative, strategic and tactical analysis, and an impressive presentation of source materials to create a comprehensive study of one of antiquity’s greatest commanders. In his latest effort, Gabriel offers new insights and explanations for Hannibal’s successes and ultimate failure, casting one of history’s most famous commanders in a completely new light. This book is a must for anyone with an interest in warfare in antiquity and in the late Roman Republican period."—Christopher A. Matthew, Macquarie University, Australia, and author of A Storm of Spears: A Reappraisal of Hoplite Combat (Christopher A. Matthew)

"In Hannibal, perhaps his best book yet, the distinguished military historian Richard Gabriel examines the life and campaigns of the great Carthaginian general in the Second Punic War. Gabriel explains how Hannibal turned a multicultural mass of Carthaginians, Iberians, Gauls, and others into one of the most effective armies in history, with which he very nearly destroyed the rising power of Rome. Combining a brilliant analysis of the strategic intricacies of the war, and a detailed examination of Hannibal’s strategy and tactics, with a careful analysis of largely overlooked logistical issues, Gabriel has produced a very valuable work of ancient military history that will interest and impress historians and general readers alike."—Albert A. Nofi, contributor for Military Chronicles and author of To Train the Fleet for War (Albert A. Nofi)

If you've been studying ancient warfare this is for you.
By Ryan Clifton
Hannibal is a great book. It is not however an easy read. If you haven't already been studying ancient warfare in some fashion, this book will probably be over your head. Gabriel is a brilliant man. I've been a big fan of his from The History channels "Battles BC". So if your already been studying ancient history. I would highly recommend.

Why does the adage "He who wins the battles, wins the war," not work for Hannibal?
By bowonwing
Good book by Professor Gabriel on Hannibal, who won all his battles (except the next to last, Zama, and his last as a navel commander for King Prusias of Bithynia- Hannibal was a field commander, not a navel commander) and lost the war with Rome. Why does the adage "He who wins the battles, wins the war," not work for Hannibal in the Carthaginians Second Punic War against Rome?

On page 218: "Hannibal failed because his operational victories did not achieve his strategic objectives. After Cannae, the strategic ground shifted beneath his feet, reducing a man who had once been the king of the battlefield to little more than a sacrificial pawn in a much larger game that he never really understood."

Also important is a footnote to Chapter 9. "Why Hannibal Failed," from the text page 212, footnote 2 (on page 248 in the text):
"My old friend and colleague the late Col. Harry Summers used to tell the story of his assignment to the negotiations in Hanoi between the North Vietnamese and the Americans in an effort to end the war. In a conversation with a North Vietnamese colonel, Summers remarked, 'Well, whatever the outcome, you never defeated us on the battlefield.' The North Vietnamese colonel smiled and said, 'That is true. But it is also irrelevant!'"

And so it was with Hannibal against the Romans, until the end at Zama and Scipio Africanus.

Gabriel's Hannibal
By Shel
This volume is an excellent examination of the genius Hannibal. Gabriel is thorough in his assessment, referencing his statements extensively to both primary ancient sources and secondary contemporary researchers. It provides insight into Hannibal's childhood and his Italian campaign. An excellent overview of the life of an extraordinary man.
