Good Intro to Econ History

Starting with the physiocrats, Heilbroner summarizes schools of economic thought, and profiles some leading exponents of each. Temperamentally an interventionist, the author nevertheless reveals some glaring weaknesses in Utopian economic thought.
His chapter on Fourier and the French philosopher's attempt to sell a business plan for some rich capitalist to fund a phalangerie system of society is very interesting, and captures the dilemma of so many meliorist thinkers who fail to convince a critical mass of society to buy into their plans to revolutionize society.
His treatment of communism is doctrinaire, with not much focus on the need for a rabid, ruthless minority to force the rest of society to accept Marxist theory and practice.
The book ends with meditations on Galbraith, and the now-quaint prescriptions for government power to "countervail" private economic power in allegedly free market economies.
The great strength of this book is not whether you agree or disagree with any of the theories profiled by Heilbroner, but that he presents them in a compelling way, relates them to the real people who expressed them distinctively, and creates the desire to learn more. That was Isaac Asimov's definition of what it means to learn.
This book is very good for younger readers who need a challenge.

About the Author

 

Ann is a director of her own company, Ann Gravells Ltd, an educational consultancy based in East Yorkshire. She specialises in teaching, training and quality assurance for the Further Education and Skills Sector.

Ann creates resources for teachers and learners such as PowerPoints and handouts for the TAQA units and for the Award and the Certificate in Education and Training. These are available via her resource website: www.anngravells.co.uk/resources.

Ann is a consultant to the University of Cambridge’s Institute of Continuing Education. She has worked for several awarding organisations producing qualification guidance, policies and procedures, and carrying out quality assurance of teacher training qualifications. Great for First Time Programmers As Well

The book's back cover says that both seasoned programmers and new programmers will find the book useful - as a first time programmer, I agree. Syntax is discussed artfully, leaving more room for an exploration of concepts and practices - meaning that someone new to OOP will understand not only what to do but the best way to do it. Highly recommended for people ready to learn how to program.

The book is too basic even for a first semester programming class. Running the code in Dos, come on, no new programmers are being taught that as their primary run environment at colleges anymore. I supervise the CIS/IT tutoring lab at a small college and working with the VB.Net Studio environment is one of the toughest things for students to learn. Also, with the current growth in XML students, learning VB.Net in the Studio IDE is all the more important. This is a decent "third" book to have on the subject. The author knows his stuff, he just didn't write it well or enough of it. Lastly, one other reviewer said his vb coding went back 7 years and he loved this book. Must've been the best man at the author's wedding.

Must have Vb.Net book !

Superb book, especially for people with good amount of VB6 experience.
I myself have around 7 years of VB experience (started with VB 3 in college) and before stumbling upon this title, I tried the Sam's series and was greatly disppointed since such "beginner" books devote a great deal to the syntax, starting with how to open a project and draw a form ! This book wastes no such time in trivialities since it is assumed that as an experienced VB programmer, you already know all those things. In fact, only one chapter is devoted to the syntax and thereafter it builds on the OOP concepts. At the time of this writing, I have finished only half the book (till Structures) but from what I have experienced and understood so far, I don't think the author will let me down in the remainder of the book. In fact till this point, you don't even need the Visual Studio.Net IDE since you can happily type all the class examples in Notepad and run them from DOS prompt (Of course, you need to have the .Net framework installed, which again is a free download).
So, if you're disappointed or bored by those 24 hour/21 day titles, run don't walk, to get this book !

About the Author

A Courageous Statement, A Disappointing Read

This book contains a collection of short reflections on the various sufferings of German citizens at the end of World War II (they originally appeared as newspaper articles in the author's native Sweden). Dagerman's basic argument throughout this collection is that German citizens who survived the war should not be treated as "tokens of national guilt" but rather as suffering, fallible human beings who are starving and dying under the Allied occupation. While traveling through the devastated landscape of early post-war Germany, Dagerman discovered that (at least in 1946-7) the Allies had done little to alleviate the tremendous suffering of the German survivors. He felt that punishing the vanquished at that point served no purpose and that doing so only risked pushing the survivors to acts of degradation and criminality. This in turn would do nothing to foster democracy. While I agree with Dagerman's assessment of the situation (in what is sure to be an unpopular opinion for many even today), his collection of short articles whether describing a family living in a flooded basement, train passengers being deported from one part of Germany to another, or an old woman foraging to feed her family, remain oddly unengaging and hollow. Perhaps this is because, as Dagerman himself admitted, he was a journalist who could leave this ruined landscape any time he wished. This is the sort of thing that Heinrich Boll is able to describe much more pungently and in greater depth throughout his writings, but Dagerman's attempt to describe the moral ambiguity of the situation is nonetheless appreciated.
W.G. Sebald mentions this book once or twice in his _On the Natural History of Destruction_. Though I'm not sure he had the opportunity to ***, it is still very edifying and strangely enough seems to complement _German Autumn_ rather nicely.

About the Author

Michel Foucault (1926–1984) was a French historian and philosopher associated with the structuralist and poststructuralist movements, whose work has been widely influential throughout the humanities and social sciences. Very interesting writing. Good to see him in his own words after all these years.

I am still reading it. It is quite fascinating to actually read him in his own words. I have come across references to him so many times over the years in reference to various intellectual positions, that I finally decided that I needed to read some of his own stuff. And linguistics is one of my main interests, of course "all the world loves a little madness", and the variations of desire make amazing reading.

Classic Text on the Hindu Temple

This is the classic two-volume text on the Hindu temple by a scholar who was loved and revered by her colleagues and students. It refers to ancient texts and a number of stories to elucidate the topic. Kramrisch delineates the Vastu Purusha Mandala, the basic plan of all Hindu temples (and in other forms, the basic plan of all buildings), as a "ritual diagram" of squares which depicts "divine essence becoming form" (6), which is exactly how it is perceived in the Vastu tradition. Emphasis is placed on the geometric form of the square as "literally rhe fundamental form of Indian architecture" (22). Tirthas are described as pilgrimage destinations which serve as doorways to the divine; Kramrisch notes that "the main tirtha is that of the mind" (4). There are also interesting references to the sacred role and use of trees.
