It is said that fate is a cruel mistress - perhaps the same might be said of Rock 'n' Roll! In this book, Michele Primi presents the stories of 63 Rock 'n' Rollers who died tragically or mysteriously, and nearly always young. Here you can read about the deaths of Buddy Holly, Keith Moon, Sid Vicious, Whitney Houston, and so many more. Each artist gets a page or more of text, telling his or her story, and a number of great pictures.

This is a very interesting book. It's a history of Rock 'n' Roll, told through the short stories of each artist's life and death. I must say, though I had heard bits and pieces of each of these stories, I enjoyed how the book brought them all together and gave me a thumbnail sketch of just what happened. It's really quite fascinating.

If you are interested in Rock 'n' Roll (and who isn't?), then you really should get this book. I think that you will enjoy it!

The information and stories in this book are extremely informative. However, this is the most poorly edited book I have ever read. Grammar mistakes abound throughout the entire pierce and it dramatically takes away from the enjoyment of the work.

Awful editing.

I'm not even a quarter of the way through this book but it's atrocious to read. Dates don't match up, words are misspelled, the entire first sentence is a run on with no point. It's not really even a sentence being truthful. I'm no grammar major, but it's painful. It takes away from what could be a good book. Now I can't determine if what I'm reading is even true or if someone just thought it would be cool to write a book and have it published....painful.

Lessons For Us All

After reading Qaisra Shahraz's latest novel, Revolt, I wanted to read her other works. This book is an eclectic mix of short stories, under the title of her first short story, A Pair of Jeans, and each examines the common theme of her work - the cultural issues within the East and West divide, and the inevitable modern day crossover between the two worlds.

The eponymous story, A Pair of Jeans, centres on a young Muslim woman torn between leading two lives; the lure of Western values that she faces in a life outside of the traditional value system with which she lives within with her family. Explored via the universal symbol of Western democratic clothing – a pair of jeans – the issues of female sexuality, multiple identities, and cultural clashes are unravelled to reveal universally understood moral and emotional dilemmas lying beneath: loyalty, faith, and integrity.

The rest of the stories in the book all deal with the central theme of the cultural divide, but also examine the inner turmoil beneath the surface of one’s values and beliefs, no matter what faith or background.

The Zemindar’s Wife addresses the feudal lifestyle and class consciousness of traditional rural life in Pakistan as underlying analogy of the West vs East divide. This is a story that uncovers many layers: the beautiful and privileged life of the Zemindar and his wife – an exotic fascination – that possesses a compelling hold over the villagers, despite the gaping chasm of the wealth and power that divides them; the ironic beauty that has allowed the Zemindar’s wife to command respect and authority, but has also alienated her from others; the eventual meeting and melding of two people with opposing ideas who find that love brings them together and answers their long-held, yet unrealised, quests to fulfil their desires as one goal. And, perhaps, this story is the culmination of the cultural and moral dilemmas addressed within this collection of short stories.

A Pair of Jeans provides lessons for us all, no matter what faith or background. It is an invaluable insight into the difficulties of assimilation, adapting, and adjusting of different cultures, not just via the crossover into other worlds, but also within the familiar confines of the world in which we are raised and honour.

The beautiful full-color charts and accompanying photos capture the many moods of the feline persuasion at play and at rest, with well-chosen backgrounds to set off their colors, markings, and personalities. All the designs are worked in basic tent stitch, though the high level of detail necessitates some degree of needlework experience. About the Author
Julie Hasler is a popular cross stitch designer and author of many books on the subject. She first became interested in cross stitch while recovering in hospital from a motorbike accident, and soon turned to creating her own designs. Since then her work has appeared in exhibitions, books, magazines and newspapers. Julie lives in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire.

Cats with Character to Make as Needlepoint

Cats are notoriously difficult animals to capture in art, and perhaps that is why cat lovers, like me, are so enchanted by a well-drawn picture of one. Having said that, needlepoint versions of cats which really capture their personalities are even more difficult to find. Julie Halser, a British needlepoint and cross stitch designer has managed to give us the treat of beautifully designed cats in her 1998 book, Needlepoint Cats.

Being a cat lover herself, Hasler abses each design on an actual cat. Zoe's Favorite Toy, for example, shows a black and white cat with a toy mouse being held to the ground by one paw. My favorite design of all, Jo Jo, shows a massive grey British shorthair, against a mostly purple patchwork design. Jo Jo looks exactly like one of my cats, even down to the serene face.

Another wonderful aspect of Hasler's designs is her way with backgrounds. No acres of single color backgrounds here; the designs include fields of flowers, a celestial background, Morris-style greenery, stained glass, and oriental rugs.

Designs in many sizes are included here as well from the tops of small trinket boxes to shaped pillows and rugs. One of my favorites is Peeping Tom a small round picture of a cats face. Framed with a wide mat, you can almost imagine this cat is looking through a peephole at you.

The book is clearly planned by a stitcher with exceptionally large, clear color charts, with a color key on the same page. The color numbers are given for the recommended thread. Along with an introductory chapter on basic techniques, there are helpful listings in the back of suppliers and a US/UK glossary to help with "translation."

From start ot finish, this is an outstanding project book.

That aside, the charts are easy to read with a combination of color and symbols. Most of the backgrounds are repeats and would be easy to substitute for each other. The cats themselves are beautiful. Recommended for experienced needleworkers.

Julie Hasler has captured the heart of the cat lover. When I look at needlepoint books the first thing I look for is a design of a cat, and to think here is a book with no cutesy cats. Each design reminds one of some cat one has known. The only problem is deciding which to make first. Keep doing more books, Julie Hasler!

This book is detailed, sophisticated, and surprisingly hip. I especially enjoyed the chapter on the blues as well as how the authors noted the effect of beat placement on harmonic choices. This sentence struck me: 'We can hear and feel a chord operating one way when it arrives, but our interpretation of that chord can also adjust retroactively.' The best jazz theory book I've studied (out of 20+) !!!

I must own 20+ jazz theory books. This book is at the top of my list in terms of clarity of exposition. I am a professor myself, so when I say clear and thoughtful, I mean it. I'd give them an A+ if they were in my course.
I am not a beginner musician, somewhere in the upper intermediate range. Caution: The book is not for the beginner. One needs to understand, to get through it, the various keys, scales, 7th chords, II V Is and more, etc, which most people that have played or taken lessons for 2-3 years probably do.
Then, this book does a fantastic job explaining how the various chords (dominant, for example) can be tweaked to make them more interesting and what substitutions work and which ones don't. Ditto for progressions and minor keys, etc. The flow of what and especially WHY is very clearly described, unlike most other books.
I don't write many reviews, but this one is so well written, I think others should know . . .

This book is better than yours

The reviewer above me stated that this new book is similar to 'The Chord Scale Theory and Jazz Harmony' by Barrie Nettles, Richard Graf. While not untrue, this book is makes CST obsolete.

CST was so eloquently writen, sort of like an exercise in reading coprehension. It's a great book, but you realy have to read between the lines, over and over again.

This new book is a real joy to read and easy to understand, yet much more evolved and expanded.
The language is clear and the explanations are far deeper so you won't be left with unanswered questions.

Btw, this is a theory text, Im not sure why the reviewer above me said it was practice orientated.

THE jazz harmony book to have

Although I have been a classical pianist for over 10 years, I have always had a desire to learn jazz. I've taken lessons from several teachers but have never been able to effectively grasp the concept of improvisation and harmonization. Improvisation in classical music is non-existent. With that being said, this book has been a life changer. It should be known that this book is definitely not for beginning musicians. Although it briefly goes over chords in the introduction, if you are brand new to music, I would not recommend this book. However, since I bought this book with some sort of background knowledge on music theory, it made it slightly easier to comprehend. This book is quite advanced and may seem tedious at times, but this is only because it goes into such great detail. Even though I was frustrated at times trying to grasp all the information, I stuck through it and learned so much. If I can go through this book from cover to cover, so can you!

Excellent for the Physics C AP test

I bought several AP Physics books to supplement my daughter's physics class at school. After buying 4 AP guides, 2 textbooks, looking up the openly available free response questions for the last 7 years,and the available multiple choice questions, I found this book to be the best guide for the Physics C exam.

The author does an excellent job of presenting the material in a way that is very similar to the material available from prior actual tests.

There is no doubt that the author's strength is in the calculus based approach to the exam (which after all is what the Physics C exam is supposed to be about). His methods are clearly presented and easily understood. Importantly, he doesn't overly focus on the mathematics by presenting every possible physics - calculus connection. Just the ones that you need to know.

The physics concepts themselves are also well done. The problems are quite clever but yet test the simple concepts of physics well. My impression is that the actual test is similar in this regard. In essence the format is (a) do you know the concept that is being tested?, (b) can you efficiently solve the problem in one, two, or three steps? The author is able to reproduce this format. My last piece of advice is to avoid the fairly basic guides claiming to cover both the Physics B and C exams, as they are good for the Physics B but NOT for the Physics C exam. This is book is far superior (see my other reviews).

Physics C is a great review

This is a great review for the AP Physics student! Mooney does a great job condensing the material tested in the Physics C exam in both the Mechanical and E&M areas and provides great examples to drive home the concepts. I would suggest this book to any student as a supplement to their classroom textbooks.

Great book for self-pedagogy, given a conceptual background in physics

I took the AP Physics B class as a junior in high school and got a 5 on the exam. I also got an 800 on the SAT2 in physics. I planned on going to college to study a field of engineering, which would require calculus-based physics. However, my high school did not have a course in physics C, and I wanted to place out of the introductory mechanics and E&M courses at my university. I therefore decided to self-study for the Physics C: Mechanics and Physics C: E&M exams.

This prep book is the reason I got 5s on both of those exams despite not having taken a class in calculus-based physics. Its explanations are clear, and it has practice problems that closely resemble the conceptual nature of the multiple choice section of the AP exams. This is something that a lot of prep books miss out on. (It, of course, has good free response practice, which most prep books hit well.)

If I was able to teach myself the content of these exams via this prep book, you will be able to reinforce a full-year class via this prep book.
