Freshly Creative

Alot of drawing books I own give step by step instructions to drawing a specific character. How to Draw Furries does something a little different. It not only gives the step by step instructions, but it also provides instruction on how to color and how to use perspective in backgrounds. The most impressive quality of this book is that it opens up new possibilities for anthro artists. It covers a wide range of different types of 'furries' that spans not only from cats and dogs, but to birds, horses, and rodents as well. Beautiful and well done.

For all the stigma that "furries" get, it's amazing just how detailed some of the artwork is at times. Much of it is incredible because of the artist's knowledge of both human and animal anatomy.

I picked up a copy of this book because I do dabble in anthropomorphic drawings from time to time. I usually have a hard time with animal facial details, longer snouts like many dogs especially, but this book gives a good visual breakdown of how it should look. The same holds true for the other types of animals covered in the book.

At the start of the book there is a (very) quick breakdown of human anatomy and each chapter goes over the defining features of the animal type. It's not a perfect resource, but it does help greatly if you're trying to wrap your mind around getting your drawing to look like what you want.

My only complaint really is that it doesn't go into greater detail with the anatomy, but if it had, the book could easily be twice as thick. It would also end up being quite repetitive at times.

Artists with some previous skill would probably get the most out of this book. Even advanced artists could draw some inspiration.

A book for beginners and artists alike

I'm a young artist taking on different forms of drawing, painting and sculpting digitally. I was having difficulty correctly applying animal characteristics to humanoid figures (Anthropomorphic Beings). It's a great book for young and older artists alike taking on the furry (same as Anthropomorphic) world of art. I wouldn't go off the book forever as, if your like me, take on other habits that naturally grow on you over time. For instance, how you start out sketching you may draw differently then the book like more sharper boxy edges then round and natural - it's more of a personal preference then anything.

poor practice questions

the book gives 2 actual exams and 3 "lsat-like" exams along with practice "lsat-like" questions in each of the three sections. when you go through the "lsat-like" questions, you can tell there is a difference in the quality of the problem sets and questions. but much worse than the fact that the "lsat-like" problems are not comparable quality to the actual tests, the answer section gives very poor explanations for why one answer is better than the others, except to say that it is correct and the others are not.

the practice tests that are not real also fall short of providing a conversion from raw-score to actual lsat score, so even after you spend a full two-three hours taking a practice test, you don't really know how it would have been scored.

i would recommend buying actual lsat tests to practice off of or the kaplan books that have better explanations for the answers.

M. Yau is right, the quality of this book seems sub-par. You can sense a difference between what the real tests questions feel like versus the ones created for the book, and the explanations of the answers get very lazy as the book goes on, supplying no real explanations. After I while I didn't trust whether I was getting an accurate barometer of a real LSAT. Also there are several typos and mistakes in the book, which make you doubt what you're reading sometimes when you come across a stumper. I'm very frustrated and I'm about to drop this book and go buy a new one.

not good for a 'base" study book

I have explored (bought or borrowed) almost every prep series out there on the market. I got to Barron's last and I must admit it was very disappointing. I have reviewed both the 12th and 13th editions and they are very similar so if you really love this series just buy one not both.

Now since I don't like this series I will say this, do not try to learn their techniques they truly are rubbish. The explanations are very short and do not give you much insight. Also I really just laughed out loud when I read through the logic games and their suggested set-ups. OMG, if you do these set-ups first off they will eat at your time (way too elaborate) AND they will confuse the heck out of you! It took more energy to try to follow the suggested format then to just use commonsense and guess (assuming the question is just that difficult).

The one positive I will note is that the questions in the diagnostic part and the sample tests are "closer" to real LSAT questions when compared to Kaplan but that isn't saying much. In my humble opinion official LSAT material paired with Powerscore truly is the best stuff on the market for those of you (like me) who are "teaching" ourselves vs. classroom instruction. If you insist on using this just use it for more practice tests but know that these are "easier" than the real deal so your score will tend to be inflated.

This 'book' and its contents are nothing more than pure fantasy concocted by a Paranormal group that have not done anything and never will do anything to further investigation into the moors murders case.
I have had the great misfortune to have been contacted by this group before this nonsense was published and I was asked to take them seriously. Having spent 50 years living with this case and going over the known facts countless times I can state that this pathetic attempt to gain an insight into more facts and to get into the head of Brady is one of the worst examples of self-publicity and total rubbish I have ever come across.
I have even had cause to contact the Greater Manchester Police about the anguish these people cause to myself and my family (I am the brother of Keith Bennett, the only victim of Brady and Hindley not to have found.) The latest quote I have from the police is 'We all share the same views of the Worsley Paranormal Society and again they have been politely but clearly told where they stand and informed of our views on the lack of legitimacy of their visions/musings/opinions.'

This group of misled and misinformed individuals still trawl the internet claiming, firstly, that they have the support of the police and then they state that they cannot understand why they are not taken seriously! Nobody with any sort of understanding of this case and the details of this case will ever take them seriously, the sooner they take that FACT in the better for all concerned.

A different insight into the Moors Murders

A book which obviously is bothering people ? especially ones who have never even read it yet make a comment. The Secret Key to The Moors Murders is a book that is showing why Ian Brady was influenced by things he read and watched like films. He was living in a time warp and acted out much in a fantasy world he created. By using History and historical people he admired, like Oliver Cromwell, writers and poets and especially the Industrial Revolution,he was able to map the areas to this and create a puzzle field where he buried clues to what this was all about. The writers and Geniuses like James Joyce, W B Yeats, T S Eliot and the surrealism Artists of Paris.. I explain why I am able to see these .. then I have gone deeper into the Occult and Crowley and the areas he visited to see why these were important to him and possible sites for other victims. Its complex and no wonder he has been able to hide behind all of this and keep his game going. Even the names of people he writes to mean more to him, like Cowley and even the name Bennett..

Robert Harley is controversial. He is carrying the mantle of Harry Pearson and J. Gordon Holt and is a leading exponent of the subjective school of hifi journalism. For those who believe that subjective evaluation is the only legitimate approach, this book has a lot to offer. For those who believe that measurements and objective criteria for evaluation have a place, this book will disappoint. For those of us who think that a blend of both are valuable for evaluation, this book is worthwhile. The book is well written and Harley is well schooled in his subject. While not afraid of controversy, he is also not afraid to advise his readers to use their own ears and form their own impressions of all things audio. The book is meant to be a reference rather than be read cover to cover. Chapters are broken up in a logical manner to facilitate the use of the book on an on-going basis. There is enough new material to make the latest edition (4th) worth buying for those who have the 3rd edition.

A real Handbook- Something to come back to again and again. Lots of Tweaks and years of Knowledge shared to reveal the most music from your own equipment. Ie only scratched the surface, but already I am using info on digital file types, downloads and digital servers, things I wish I'd started out with. Invaluable for fledgling Audiophiles, gives you the foundation to make wise purchases, and getting the most from your audio reproduction. For people who view music listening as a distraction, this book will show how rewarding actual CRITICAL LISTENING can be, and it all starts with curiosity. Great Value- Highly Recommended !

Where's the index?

This should receive 5 stars for its content; it is a valuable update of a classic. The 1 star is for the Kindle edition's inexcusable omission of the detailed index that appears in the print edition. (It is actually shown in the table of contents...grayed out!) This is a reference book that covers a huge amount of material; a carefully-compiled index is critical to its use, as Mr. Harley is obviously aware since he went to the trouble of compiling one. And no, doing a word search does not replace the need for a carefully curated index. Had I known (there is no way to tell from Amazon's product page), I would have gone with the print edition. As it is, my index-less Kindle copy greatly diminishes the usefulness of a wonderful reference book.

Ron Severdia is a Creative Director in the San Francisco Bay Area and has directed interactive branding projects-from web sites and brand identities to interactive campaigns-for clients such as HP, Verizon, Electronic Arts, Yahoo!, Visa, Walmart.com, and Apple. His prior experience includes stints as a Senior Designer and then Creative Director at Young & Rubicam, DDB, Glow, and Landor Associates. Fluent in several languages, he worked for seven years in Europe, where he won several awards for successful creative work. Ron runs the interactive agency Kontent Design and has been using Joomla since 2006 to build sites for companies, large and small, including a worldwide branding site for Citibank. Ron is a member of the Joomla Leadership Team and recently redesigned the new look of Joomla.org and the forthcoming Joomla 1.6 interface.

Kenneth Crowder is a Senior Software Engineer at BIGSHOT, a full-service marketing and advertising agency located in Kansas City, Missouri. Excellent book for beginning Joomla site owners

This is the first Joomla title that I am aware of from O'Reilly, and I was interested in checking it out for that reason alone.

The publisher describes this as suitable for introductory/intermediate users with some basic HTML and/or CSS skills. As someone who teaches Joomla development, I was a little suspicious. After spending some time with Using Joomla, however, I would have to agree that this is an excellent book for non-developers, but with a couple of caveats.

Chapter 2 suggests to readers that installing Joomla with Fantastico is an excellent option, and I couldn't disagree. The downside to this approach is that not all hosts will provide the most current version of Joomla. This may pose some security risks to your site, but if you're more of a hobbyist than relying on Joomla as a business-critical site, that may not be a problem. Chapter 2 also briefly discusses how to install Joomla using FTP, as well as provides an overview of the technical environment needed to run Joomla. In a future edition, I would recommend either eliminating this information (it's too simplistic to be very helpful) or providing more useful links to additional information. For example, providing the books' links as a reference point to MySQL compatibility isn't going to be terribly useful. As a beginning user I primarily need to know how to find out this information, which is going to vary from host to host.

Across every chapter, Severdia and Crowder do an excellent job of explaining the functionality of every administrative aspect of Joomla. Further, they provide succinct explanations of every setting imaginable, and the book's index is thoughtful and well-organized.

One strange aspect of an otherwise excellent book is that the cover teases: Includes Joomla 1.6. First, be warned that this amounts to 8 pages, including some beefy screenshots. This chapter most appropriately should have been prefaced with the fact that Joomla 1.6 is still in beta, and not yet ready for primetime. Period. If you want an overview of 1.6, the book does provide it, but Joomla offers a better description on their site ([...]).

While I wouldn't recommend this title to my students (or other developers), it's precisely the title that I want to hand to new Joomla Web site owners.

Only moderately useful

This is a moderately useful book on the fundamentals of Joomla. Unfortunately, the authors have chosen to shoehorn 120 pages of useful information into the book's 416 pages. The book spends an inordinate amount of space covering menu options, frequently without any more content or organization than provided by Joomla's online help files. The book opens with 13 pages on introduction and installation. Although the book describes its audience as the non-expert Joomla user it spends the next 200 pages plodding through Joomla from Joomla's point of view, rather than covering basic concepts or tutorial material. This Saharan trek is followed by the 90 pages of chapters 17 and 18 that I found to be very helpful. Chapter 18 - "Extending Your Site" - was the best. The authors describe a number of popular Joomla extensions that often have minimal online documentation from their developers. The book's remaining 80 pages alternate between useful content and more tedious rehashing of the online documentation.

Overall, the book presents some useful material but generally misses the mark as an introductory guide. The authors seem to have assembled it hastily without much thought for their readers and buried the useful content among a great deal of fluff. I will look forward to a new Joomla title from O'Reilly. It will be too late for my introduction to Joomla but may benefit my authors and publishers as they are working to get started.

Not enough.

I picked up this book to add to the excellent online resources available for learning Joomla. I have limited knowledge of HTML and CSS. I am primarily interested in learning Joomla so that I can add some web development skills to my project management skill set. I found this book to be not much more that a description of what the various buttons and functions do. This information is abundantly available for free in organized formats in many locations on the web. For some, this may be what they are looking for; an offline user's guide. So far in my quest to learn Joomla I have found articles explaining why or why not to use a particular function or explanations of suggested practices to be the most helpful. There is very little of that kind of information found here. To sum up, I found this book to be primarily descriptive in its content. For the given topic and context I would think a text that is more prescriptive (although conservative) would better serve the beginning Joomla learner. I was looking for instruction but found none.
