About the Author
Ren Hurst is a former horse trainer and hoof care specialist. After several major shifts in perspective, she left Texas and the professional world of horses to start a sanctuary in far Northern California based on everything she had learned from the equines in her life. She is now the director of Sanctuary13 and a co-founder of the New World Sanctuary Foundation in southern Oregon. This is her first book.

Ren's memoir allows the reader to experience her courage as she shares the truths she's learned along her journey with horses and in her life that led to the ultimate discovery...true, unconditional love. Although many may think this book is solely about her growth and changes with horses, she has given us a brave insight into her personal life and the many lessons that she's learned along the way that have shifted her belief system and way of being. Her fearlessness in continuously questioning tradition both in the horse industry as well as the real world is inspiring and helpful to those of us that haven't had the nerve to vocalize these feelings of confusion within ourselves. This book is for anyone that is ready to step outside of their comfort zone, experience some growing pains, and begin living in harmony with every being in the world.

A woman who is changing the world

Riding on the Power of Others is a true love story set in this real world. Ren generously has written a memoir of her life growing up in an American culture and peering through the distortions to discover the love that is behind all of our relationships. I recommend this book to any person who is open to exploring new perspectives in our relations with animals, humans, and our natural world. I am honored to call Ren a friend and I see clearly that she is committed to living her truth and using what she has experienced to create sanctuary not only for horses but for humans who are willing to work together to create a kind, compassionate world.

Riding on the Power of Others is a spiritual coming-of-age memoir (mostly) that is clear, vulnerable, insightful. Hurst is unapologetically truthful about what her relationship with horses showed her about herself, how she changed it, and why it matters for the rest of us. There are scenes in the book that will have anyone who has ever had a horse, wanted a horse, loved a horse, or loved the IDEA of a horse on the verge of tears. Those tears are the watershed of compassion, and she’s got it in spades, along with the courage to show us how horses show us who we really are. If you're ready to ride on your own power, pick up this book.

"Poignant," aside from being cliche, isn't quite the right word - though on first pass Learn to Swim does seem to evoke the sadness and regret that "poignant" is defined as.
But as Haeger explores the intimacy of friendship through the everyday events of 10 years of life together, so much more is unpacked than just sadness or regret. There is hope, wonder, growth, pain, sorrow, loss, joy. All the ingredients that make up any friendship worth having.
An excellent memoir exploring how life and those everyday events shape us even as our choices shape those events and our memory of them.
Well worth the read.

There are only a few books I've ever read that are considered a "fast read" but also make me stop to think - over and over. This is one of those books. Broad themes of childhood, fear, joy, friendship, and loss are obvious, but within those are the deeper, more subtle messages of navigating childhood, how to be a friend and alternately fail as a friend, how joy and fear and love and loss are intertwined...as you read Haeger's account, you can't help but take stock in your own experiences. Simple, thoughtful, wonderful.

I was absolutely blown away by this book. It was one of the most powerful stories I've read in a long time. Incredibly brave and honest. It had me nodding along and relating, and wanting to reach out to my friends and family just to talk. A sometimes sad, always genuine, and completely unique experience.

The book is solidly okay - just not exactly what I was expecting

As an advocate of the visual revolution - I own all of Dan Roam's previous books (even the workbook) and have been happy with all of his publications re: Back of the Napkin and beyond - until now. I was disappointed after receiving this book because there is a LOT of repeat information from the previous books. Nice review - but I could pull my other books off the shelf if I wanted a review.

Just be aware that the focus of this book is not a continuation of his previous (excellent) work - it is about how to use those tools to organize thoughts in order to present. Not a bad topic for a book - but not exactly what I was expecting.

In love with Dan Roam

I love all of Dan's books but his newest is particularly useful whether you're a seasoned or novice presenter. He breaks down the daunting task of preparing a presentation into simple and memorable chunks: be honest, tell a story, use pictures. And he reassures us that there are only FOUR kinds of presos: the Report, the Explanation, the Pitch and the Drama. Those are interesting distinctions and they immediately got me thinking about my own talks - and what fell into which category.

Show And Tell is a picture book itself, filled with Dan's (well, I hope they're Dan's) delightfully quirky drawings. This is a go-to resource whether you're preparing a TED talk, a local Pecha Kucha or Ignite talk, or your company's 3rd quarter outlook. I only wish Dan were at my side, narrating, as I dip back into the book for guidance. I was lucky enough to hear him on his "super secret" Webinar for pre-order buyers. His voice is calming and clear. He turns a big scary task (creating PPTs) into something doable and fun. Thank you Dan!

An amazing , simple and effective book

This is the third book I read for dan roam , I bought it the first day it was out and I finished it the same day , I could not stop my self from reading it till the end .

I know I will have to go through it multiple times to implement the ideas into my presentations .

The kindle edition needs better formatting though .

I recommend it as a book in any library .

Jazz Chants to jazz up your class

The Jazz/Grammar Chants series is an excellent supplement for virtually any ESL class. In Jazz chants, intonation and stylistics are presented along with vocabulary and other points. Grammar Chants gives the teacher the opportunity to present the student with a given grammar point and have him internalize it painlessly. Grammar chants are useful for beginners and intermediate-level ESL learners. Don't expect to teach advanced topics with these texts.

Neither of these books, in my opinion, would be appropriate as basic course texts, but as supplementary material they are invaluable!

GREAT Resource for ESL!

I had heard of Jass Chants, but until I bought this CD, I did not understand why Jazz Chants could be useful for teaching ESL. There are over 50 Jazz Chants on this CD, of every type, useful for nearly every level of English. They are fun, clever--some are humorous, too. This is a terrific resource for ESL teachers. Good for lessons, for short activities, and for inspiration for your own Jazz Chants.

I've read many opening books over my 40 years of playing chess. "Play the Ponziani" is one of the most thoroughly written books I have ever read. Not only is it comprehensive in analysis, it is also entertaining reading as the authors reveal exactly what they are thinking throughout each variation they analyze. This is rare form for chess books on opening theory. I commend the authors for a job well done.

Moreover, I am fascinated by the depth of play that results from the Ponziani. Many of these "old systems" such as the Guico Piano or Vienna Game, I have dismissed for years because of the often boring symmetrical positions that occur. However, White's third move: 3. c3 truly forces the game away from symmetry where black will often respond with moves such as 3... d5 or 3... Nf6. The results as proven by this book are dynamic play with White keeping his first move initiative and finding interesting and complex play against almost any response by Black.

I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to spice up their chess opening repertoire. After reading this book you will be well prepared even from the Black side of the board. Actually, if you play Black 1. e4 e5 then this book is absolutely critical for you! There are several excellent variations that the Black side of the board can steer the game into to create a dynamic position that can easily trip up White. So, even though the book is written to win with the White pieces, the book is very fair in analyzing the best moves for both sides. Again, Bravo to the authors for a job well done.

Plenty of content for everybody

I really liked this book, since it's a very detailed guide covering the more important lines in great detail, with analysis going to a very advanced stage of the game.

1) There are many alternatives presented for white in different positions, there are lines that can lead to a wild sacrificial game, while there are line where you can get a quiet, positional game. It's up to you what kind of game you want to get. For example, I played this game following the book:

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. c3 d5 4. Qa4 f6 5. Bb5 Ne7 6. exd5 Qxd5 7. O-O e4 8. c4 Qd6 9. c5 Qxc5 10. d4 Qb6 11. d5 a6 12. Nc3 exf3 13. dxc6 bxc6 14. Bc4 fxg2 15. Re1 Bd7 16. b4 Qb7 17. Bf4 1-0

For the moment my oponnent deviated from the book, he was already lost.

An alternative for white, if he is not in the mood of gambits is 5.d3.

Another line where there are many options presented is this one, that I used in a game:

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. c3 Nf6 4. d4 Nxe4 5. d5 Ne7 6. Nxe5 Ng6 7. Qf3 Nf6 8. Nxg6 hxg6 9. Be3 Be7 10. Nd2 d6 11. h3 Bg4 12. Qf4 Bd7 13. Bc4 a5 14. a4 g5 15. Qd4 g4 16. 0-0-0 gxh3 17. Be2 c5 18. dxc6 bxc6 19. Nc4 d5 20. Ne5 Bd6 21. Nxd7 Qxd7 22. Rxh3 Rxh3 23. gxh3 Qxh3 24. Qb6 Qd7 25. Rh1 Ke7 26. Bd3 Rb8 27. Qxa5 Qb7 28. b4 Ra8 29. Qb6 Qxb6 30. Bxb6 Rxa4 31. Kb2 Ra8 32. Re1+ Kf8 33. Bd4 Re8 34. Ra1 Ne4 35. Ra6 Rc8 36. Kc2 c5 37. Be3 Ke7 38. b5 c4 39. Bxe4 dxe4 40. b6 Rb8 41. Ra4 Rc8 1/2-1/2

7.Qf3!? According to Taylor, he considers 7.Qd4! the main line. There are 7(!) alternatives for white deeply analyzed in this position.

2) There's a complete chapter devoted to 3... d5 4. Bb5, this line was previously considered the main line, but in the book is shown how this line is actually losing for white. It's interesting that you can be lost so early in the game, but most lines are forced and were analyzed exhaustively.

3) I have been participating in the Ponziani Power in colaboration with Mr. Taylor, and we had a 13 games winning streak in "vote team chess" against strong teams. This speaks for the chances that can be created with this "quiet" opening.

4) It includes a chapter with easy to learn solutions in case you don't have a repertoire against 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3.

5) This line it's usually considered a "quiet" option for white, but it actually have good stats in databases: win ratio 41% lose ratio 29% draw 30% (in comparison the ruy lopez has a win ratio of 40%).

Overall: I think you can benefit from reading this book and applying the many ideas presented here, just choose the lines that fit your style. I was previously a Blackmar Diemer player so the wild lines are ok for me, but maybe for you a slower game could be ok, and this is also possible with this flexible opening.

Suitably impressed (has grown on me in the last 3 years)

As a long time Vienna player (1. e4 e5 2. Nc3) in the last year or so I've been exploring alternatives against 1. e4 e5 without venturing into mainstream Italian, Scotch or Spanish waters. I've tried the Belgrade Gambit, Bishop's Gambit and Center Game. The first two have entire books devoted to them, but both involve pawn sacrifices and are therefore highly speculative by nature, and for the time being you will be largely on your own if you try the Center Game, though I understand there is a book in the works. So the fact that this book on Ponziani's has just come out, and that it does not require a speculative pawn sacrifice, caused me to give it a try. Dave Taylor had previously written "Ponziani Power" a decided labor of love, and yet does not allow his passion for his favored opening taint his objectivity, for instance in concluding that the line 3...d5 4. Bb5? is just bad for White.

Besides the main responses 3...d5 and 3...Nf6, this book does not skimp on some of the less common responses, for instance with 25 pages on 3...f5 which indeed is the line I'd try as Black since not only do I play 1. e4 but I also defend it with 1...e5. One of my only gripes thus far is that in the line 3...Nf6 4. d4 Nxe4 5. d5 Ne7 6. Nxe5 Ng6, the move 7. Nxg6 is dismissed with ?! which I consider an incorrect evaluation. The problem is the authors only consider 7...hxg6 and then either 8. Qe2?! or 8. Bd3?! (those are my ?! in these cases), but the correct move can be extrapolated from other variations given by the authors, particularly 7. Qf3 Qe7 where the author's write that gives White "a small but solid edge, by weakening Black's kingside pawn structure" with 8. Nxg6. So why doesn't that likewise apply to the immediate 7. Nxg6?! Indeed after 7. Qf3 Qe7 8. Nxg6 hxg6 the authors give 9. Be3 and I would hereby like to recommend that the same is the correct move after 7. Nxg6 hxg6: 8. Be3! in which case 8...Qe7 9. Qf3 transposes, or 9. Qd3 is quite playable, the idea being that, unlike the lines 7. Nxg6 hxg6 8. Qe2?! or 8. Bd3?! quick Queenside development by White, culminating in Nd2 (after Be3 and Queen out), and if ...Nxd2 then Kxd2 and White's queen rook is ready to come to the open e-file with significant impact.

I do have another specific gripe but I want to preface it by saying this -- ALL opening books have their shortcomings. And this is actually one of the better opening books I've read lately, and bear in mind, I've now switched to where I'm more concerned with what to play against the Ponziani than actually playing it. Long story short the book leaves out the following line, but I've checked my database and it only shows three games ever, and all of those in the last half of last decade. So probably no opening book has ever covered the following, the specific line being 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. c3 Nf6 4. d4 exd4 5. e5 Ne4 6. Qe2 f5 7. exf6 d5 8. Nbd2 Qxf6 9. Nxe4 dxe4 10. Qxe4 and now 10...Qe7. Not saying it's an especially good line -- the queen-less middle-game that can arise after 10. Qxe4+ is surprisingly difficult to counter -- but it is a possibility.

Now that Carlsen has played the Ponziani I can heartily recommend this book to people considering this opening. It is in general very thorough, and although there are always things to be discovered, this book is seldom if every glaringly wrong as some others in the Everyman Chess series can be. Like all such opening books it should be read critically, but when you do so, you realize just how good this book is.

Grade 3-6 An introduction to the sometimes confusing world of homographswords that are spelled alike, but are pronounced differently and have different meanings. Using the general pattern of riddle and accompanying illustration, Terban leads readers through a variety of homographs that may or may not be encountered by young readers. The book is divided into five sections which explore the various types of homographs. Answers are provided upside down in a box at the bottom of each page. They are also included in a separate listing along with a pronunciation guide at the end of each chapter. The format of the book appears to be designed for readers in grades three and four. However, despite good textual organization and entertaining and helpful illustrations showing animals enacting the homographs as clues, some homographs may be much too difficult for that age group, and the format seems too young for older students. Great book, especially for non-programmer beginners

I strongly recommend this book. Well written with complete code, a strong tour of Processing and its wider ecosystem. The only caveat I would add is that if you have any programming/computer science background, a lot of this will be non-applicable to you and you'll skim through about 60% of the book to pick up the Processing-specific syntax.

Great for High School!

I'm using this book in my Intro to Computer Science class, and it is awesome!! My kids love the interactivity of the lessons and the accessibility of the code. Thank you, Dan for this book! It's the best one out there for beginner programmers!
