Engle demonstrates the role of correlations in financial decision making, and addresses the economic underpinnings and theoretical properties of correlations and their relation to other measures of dependence. He compares DCC with other correlation estimators such as historical correlation, exponential smoothing, and multivariate GARCH, and he presents a range of important applications of DCC. Engle presents the asymmetric model and illustrates it using a multicountry equity and bond return model. He introduces the new FACTOR DCC model that blends factor models with the DCC to produce a model with the best features of both, and illustrates it using an array of U.S. large-cap equities. Engle shows how overinvestment in collateralized debt obligations, or CDOs, lies at the heart of the subprime mortgage crisis--and how the correlation models in this book could have foreseen the risks. A technical chapter of econometric results also is included.

About the Author
Robert Engle is the Michael Armellino Professor in the Management of Financial Services at New York University's Leonard N. Stern School of Business. His books include "Cointegration, Causality, and Forecasting". He was awarded the 2003 Nobel Prize in economics.

Great Foucauldian discussion of science and state in India

This book is a better example of the use of Foucauldian analysis in a non-Euro/American setting. Prakash's discussion of how the colonial state used science to legitimate its rule, and how the nationalist anticolonial elites redefined and reinscribed science to legitimate their own goals is very thorough. He applies Foucault's notion of "governmentality" to demonstrate how science operated to control and maintain the populace. Highly recommended.

Not Science but more...

This not about science as such, but about the idea of science. This is one of best recent academic books that I have read on modern India. Using science as a window into the culture of modern India, or Indian modernity, Prakash provides a captivating account of how areas ranging from museums to religion to politics were refashioned. The book is also very elegant, starting with the cool cover, the well chosen chapter epigraphs, and chapter titles. You will come away with a very thoughtful, nuanced understanding of how the idea of science entered the constitution of colonial India. One last thing, though Prakash's approach is what would be called "postcolonial," it is solidly grounded in Indian materials while being very stylish. A real treat!

This is my personal journey through one of the greatest warrior and leadership cultures of today, which ultimately provided me with defining leadership characteristics and the skills of a serious warrior. As I grew and became a young man, I returned home from my first combat experience and was given my warrior's name, Evergreen Mountain. I am an American, first and foremost, but I am also a Pueblo and Yaqui Indian. I am a former member of the US Army’s 18th Airborne Corps, 75th Ranger Regiment, and spent most of my career as an operational member of a Special Missions Unit under the United States Army Special Operations Command. These are some of my most important leadership lessons learned from the battlefield of the war on terror. It is my sincere hope that this book serves as a resource and a compass, providing direction and guidance for individuals seeking or in a leadership position.

About the Author
Rob Trivino is retired from a long career in the United States Army. During his time on active duty he was assigned to several units; he spent the majority of his time in service assigned as an operational member of a United States Army Special Missions Unit under the United States Army Special Operations Command. Rob has extensive peacetime and wartime leadership and tactical experience, leading small teams and larger maneuver elements in combat at the ground tactical level. He has deployed on multiple combat missions to the Balkans, Afghanistan, and Iraq and has served as a Sniper Team Leader, Operations Sergeant Major, and both Assault and Sniper Element Sergeants Major. In his final assignment, Rob served as a senior enlisted advisor for a multi-service organization supporting the special operations community. Rob's awards and decorations include the Silver Star, the Legion of Merit, 5 Bronze Stars (2 for Valor), and the Defense Meritorious Service Medal. The BEST book on leadership I have ever read

I have read a great many books on management, leadership, motivation, etc over the years, as well as many biographies/autobiographies of special operations soldiers. I also graduated from one of the top business schools in the country that claimed to produce leaders (and does, but not because of what is taught). I can tell you with all sincerity none of the above addresses TRUE leadership the way Robert has and the best part is he keeps it simple and accessible--straight to the point, no BS. This is not a book on the military or military leadership--it is on leadership period, the military aspects are only used to illustrate his points. If you're looking for a military story there is some of that in here but you'll be disappointed if that is ALL you are seeking. Everyone should read this book, not just "leaders". Even if one is not in a leadership role, everyone needs to lead his/her own life! We are social creatures by nature and every social interaction requires the skills and methodology contained in this book. It doesn't matter if you're a CEO or a stay at home parent, you WILL benefit from this book. I come from a very long line of military on both sides of my family. I learned my leadership style (very similar to Robert's) from my father, who credits the Navy for his very successful financial career. I have been quite successful in my own career by following the same tenets of leadership Robert so brilliantly presents in this book. This year I have trained with several former Green Beret and Delta operators, every one of whom is first rate! While Navy SEALs get a lot of press, and I've known a few, I have found Delta guys have the most to offer in so many areas. These guys are not ego driven as a rule, in fact the vast majority are extremely humble, as is Robert. I have had the distinct pleasure of meeting men who served with Robert, men who are legends in their own right, tell me Robert's legacy and influence in Delta is profound. Buy this book today, you will be thoroughly engaged and it may change your life. I feel so strongly about it that I am buying several copies on my own dime to give to friends and coworkers.

Special operations soldier shares his hard earned experiences

Rob Trivino shares his hard earned leadership lessons with anybody willing to work hard to become a more effective leader. This is a great book and hard to put down. If you are looking for a shortcut to appearing to be a leader, this is not the book for you. Rob demonstrates that to become a better leader you must become a better person. Character is at the core of Rob's leadership principles. Rob is a very humble guy with a tremendous amount of credibility. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

like any other skill

After having served in the Marine Corps and currently assigned to a tactical unit for a large police force, one would think that leadership would be a natural skill. However, like any other skill, leadership needs to be cultivated, practiced and refined. Rob Trivino's book gives you a no nonsense view on how this came about for this humble hero. This book gives you real life experiences that every new military recruit, policeman, or business manager can use to improve their own role as a leader or start to build those important skills. The book keeps you wanting to read page after page, and in the end, leaves the reader reflecting on their own performance. This reader is in full agreement that leaders are made, and this book gives clear direction on what it takes to achieve that goal. As stated earlier, this book is a must have for any person in a potential leadership position.

Fabulous timeless concepts, outdated examples

If you are building a brand or a business you need to think about positioning and branding. What is it that you want to stand for that is unique and different in the market place? Positioning isn't just for big brands - it is for any brand (even your personal brand.

I would definitely recommend this book - it is well worth the read, but I would probably only give it 3.5 stars out of 5. The main reason is that the examples are WAY out of date (the book is 30 years old). The principles still apply today, however it is tough to follow a book that is referencing examples from when I was 2 years old.

I have also read another book by the same authors "The 22 Immutable Laws of Branding" and I liked this MUCH more.

So, bottom line: It is a good book, worth a read, solid principles, but out of date. This book is especially relevant if you work for a big company (most of the examples are big company examples), but the principles can also be applied to any business, or your personal brand.
Key Points:

* The position of your brand or business is in the eyes of your prospect or customer. It doesn't matter what you think your business or brand stands for or is about. They key is the perception that your customers have. "Positioning is how you differentiate yourself in the mind of the prospect. That is, you position the product in the mind of the prospect."
* Our society is overcommunicated. Even 30 years ago there were so many commercials that you had to really work to break through the noise. "We have become the world's first overcommunicated society. Each year we send more and receive less"
* It is difficult to change minds If your positioning strategy involves changing that people already think you will have a difficult time. The best strategies are congruent with what people already think and set to add or move existing perceptions, not totally change them. Once a mind is made up it is almost impossible to change. The mind accepts only that which matches prior knowledge or experience.
* Create oversimplified messages. You are lucky if people can remember one message and associate it back to your product. Less is more. Oversimplify and stick to a single message. Link one concept to one product.
* Create a category you can win. Define the category differently so that you are the biggest/best/awesomest. It is better to be a big fish in a little pond and then expand the pond. Leadership matters. You have to be #1 or #2.
* Look for the hole. Then fill it. Where is the positioning white space? What are your competitors missing in how they are positioned. What are the customer benefits that are not being addressed or exploited by competitors? Don't fall in to the "everybody" trap. You can't be all things to all people. You will end up being nothing at all.
* 80% of learning takes place through the eyes. Words matter. Especially in the service business. You need to own a phrase. Visualize the words that you are using. The goal is to drive verbal ideas into the mind.
* Isolating a narrow target is usually the first step in finding an effective position. The narrower and better defined target the better. This will help clarify your position.

A must read, but little practical examples

A classic in marketing how-tos, the authors explain the importance of offering something for sale that appeals to the buyer, not to the seller, creator, or manufacturer. The product is positioned relative to the consumer, and her needs and viewpoints of value. The basic theory is that you get into the mind of your consumer, and position your product accordingly. And on that point, almost anyone would have to agree.
You will not find the gory details in this book that you'll need to execute a marketing plan, though, but the general theme is examined, as well as various positioning examples (everything from Kleenex to Heinz Ketchup - or was that pickles?).
I was particularly disappointed about a lack of methodology to reach a positioning statement, other than some fairly broad "rules", lightly applied throughout the book. There were six questions at the end that were helpful, but did not constitute a rigorous method - well, any method really - to create a "position". If anything, I would have wished for the method that could be used to create positioning for a product, or to test a company's current positioning, rather than have as many examples of positioning failures.
Some of the author's examples seemed contradictory, and especially when the authors claimed that brand extension amounts to a virtual see-saw - one product steals the brand identity from another (Heinz Ketchup vs. Heinz Pickles - who is Heinz!?). From hindsight, it can be seen that some brand extensions have been extremely successful, while others aren't. It should shock no one that people don't want to use baking soda as anti-perspirant, for instance, and therefore completely explaining why we use Arm & Hammer to cook and deodorize the refrigerator, but do not think of it as a personal hygiene brand. I can't think of anything that I would remove from the refrigerator and rub under my arms.
In any case, this remains a quick, good read with short chapters. The examples illustrate the concepts, but you'll need to follow this up with other positioning and marketing examples in order to position your product within your industry.

Much More Than Marketing

Positioning is the idea that shook Madison Avenue to its core in the 1970s. Ries and Trout published what the high priests of Madison Avenue deemed as heresy. These two upstarts dared to take the voodoo out of marketing - and marketing has not been the same since.
Over the years I have given away countless dozens of Positioning. I have found two types of recipients: (1) Those who view it as a book on marketing, and (2) those who truly "get it."
Positioning is not actually about marketing, though that is its platform. It is about how the human mind works. The principals taught in this book apply across all of our lives - from how we are viewed by our friends to why we affiliate with a particular political party or other social cause. Learning how Positioning works is learning about life.

Those laws and regulations center on the tariff classification of merchandise under the Harmonized System (as set forth in the Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the U.S.), the valuation of goods under the GATT (now WTO) Valuation Agreement, and the rules (both preferential and non-preferential) for determining “country of origin.” The book also covers the entry and recordkeeping process for imports, intellectual property protection, CBP’s penalty regime, the use of preferential trade programs (specifically examining the North American Free Trade Agreement and its attendant Rules of Origin and Regional Value Content calculations), marking requirements, and the relationship of income tax transfer pricing rules in determining how inter-company pricing impacts declared customs values and, thus, global corporate income taxes. The system of judicial review by the U.S. Court of International Trade and U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit is also covered. Finally, the book summarizes the requirements of 47 other federal agencies that CBP is charged with administering and enforcing with respect to imported merchandise.

Meeting God: An Unexpected Journey

Driven by fierce anger after losing his daughter to a perverted killer, the protagonist takes an unexpected journey into a place that expands his mindset on God. As he takes this journey, I found myself traveling with him, and allowing my mind to be expanded on my concept of God as well. Even though this book could never be called a studious piece of theology, it has a powerful message, and that message for me was this 'Your concept of the Almighty God is too small, too confined, and steeped in too much religiosity" God is God, and He can be anything He wishes to be, and He can present Himself in whatever fashion He chooses. He is immutable, inscrutable, and omniscient. Who are we to question His authority, ability, and appearance? So when God shows Himself in The Shack to be large black woman (similar at least in my imagination to Aunt Jemimah), it is at first shocking, then amusing, but ultimately, mind expanding. If this book doesn't allow a person's concept of God to grow, I am not sure what will. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and I totally understand how it can be controversial in nature since it allows God to take on an infinitely different image than what the normative thought allows. Some would say that it trivializes God, and while I understand that sentiment, since He is, after all, the same God who would not allow Moses to even look upon His face. He is also the God who did not allow his name to even be pronounced by His people since He is so holy and righteous. In spite of those valid concerns, the concepts espoused in The Shack actually expanded God, without trivializing Him at all. In fact, for me, it actually made Him larger and even more powerful, as well as infinitely more personal than my earlier vision of His majesty. The book portrays Jesus and the Holy Spirit as entirely different characters than portrayed in normally accepted theological boundaries, but again the concepts are fresh, and expanding. I believe that any image that any of us have of the Almighty God is by definition too small regardless of how big it is, so anything that allows us to think fresh thoughts is ultimately valuable. A good, fresh read, highly recommended.

My daughter is slowly killing herself after losing her first born soon to a horrific accident. Being that he was also or first grandchild we were all devastated. I choose to believe God is good and He will guide me and my daughter and my entire family to Him and heal us...finally. This book is the beginning of that healing. I will share it with all of them. Thank you!

Very profound and thought provoking. I will never look at relationships the same way - God truly does work in mysterious ways. This book opens up the mind and soul to new possibilities and choices for life in loving relationships as we were created to be. Breaks down the barriers that hold us back ... cuts through all the crap and gets to the heart of the matter.
