I've read many opening books over my 40 years of playing chess. "Play the Ponziani" is one of the most thoroughly written books I have ever read. Not only is it comprehensive in analysis, it is also entertaining reading as the authors reveal exactly what they are thinking throughout each variation they analyze. This is rare form for chess books on opening theory. I commend the authors for a job well done.
Moreover, I am fascinated by the depth of play that results from the Ponziani. Many of these "old systems" such as the Guico Piano or Vienna Game, I have dismissed for years because of the often boring symmetrical positions that occur. However, White's third move: 3. c3 truly forces the game away from symmetry where black will often respond with moves such as 3... d5 or 3... Nf6. The results as proven by this book are dynamic play with White keeping his first move initiative and finding interesting and complex play against almost any response by Black.
I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to spice up their chess opening repertoire. After reading this book you will be well prepared even from the Black side of the board. Actually, if you play Black 1. e4 e5 then this book is absolutely critical for you! There are several excellent variations that the Black side of the board can steer the game into to create a dynamic position that can easily trip up White. So, even though the book is written to win with the White pieces, the book is very fair in analyzing the best moves for both sides. Again, Bravo to the authors for a job well done.

Plenty of content for everybody

I really liked this book, since it's a very detailed guide covering the more important lines in great detail, with analysis going to a very advanced stage of the game.
1) There are many alternatives presented for white in different positions, there are lines that can lead to a wild sacrificial game, while there are line where you can get a quiet, positional game. It's up to you what kind of game you want to get. For example, I played this game following the book:
1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. c3 d5 4. Qa4 f6 5. Bb5 Ne7 6. exd5 Qxd5 7. O-O e4 8. c4 Qd6 9. c5 Qxc5 10. d4 Qb6 11. d5 a6 12. Nc3 exf3 13. dxc6 bxc6 14. Bc4 fxg2 15. Re1 Bd7 16. b4 Qb7 17. Bf4 1-0
For the moment my oponnent deviated from the book, he was already lost.
An alternative for white, if he is not in the mood of gambits is 5.d3.
Another line where there are many options presented is this one, that I used in a game:
1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. c3 Nf6 4. d4 Nxe4 5. d5 Ne7 6. Nxe5 Ng6 7. Qf3 Nf6 8. Nxg6 hxg6 9. Be3 Be7 10. Nd2 d6 11. h3 Bg4 12. Qf4 Bd7 13. Bc4 a5 14. a4 g5 15. Qd4 g4 16. 0-0-0 gxh3 17. Be2 c5 18. dxc6 bxc6 19. Nc4 d5 20. Ne5 Bd6 21. Nxd7 Qxd7 22. Rxh3 Rxh3 23. gxh3 Qxh3 24. Qb6 Qd7 25. Rh1 Ke7 26. Bd3 Rb8 27. Qxa5 Qb7 28. b4 Ra8 29. Qb6 Qxb6 30. Bxb6 Rxa4 31. Kb2 Ra8 32. 7.Qf3!? According to Taylor, he considers 7.Qd4! the main line. There are 7(!) alternatives for white deeply analyzed in this position.
2) There's a complete chapter devoted to 3... d5 4. Bb5, this line was previously considered the main line, but in the book is shown how this line is actually losing for white. It's interesting that you can be lost so early in the game, but most lines are forced and were analyzed exhaustively.
3) I have been participating in the Ponziani Power in colaboration with Mr. Taylor, and we had a 13 games winning streak in "vote team chess" against strong teams. This speaks for the chances that can be created with this "quiet" opening.
4) It includes a chapter with easy to learn solutions in case you don't have a repertoire against 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3.
5) This line it's usually considered a "quiet" option for white, but it actually have good stats in databases: win ratio 41% lose ratio 29% draw 30% (in comparison the ruy lopez has a win ratio of 40%).
Overall: I think you can benefit from reading this book and applying the many ideas presented here, just choose the lines that fit your style. I was previously a Blackmar Diemer player so the wild lines are ok for me, but maybe for you a slower game could be ok, and this is also possible with this flexible opening.

Suitably impressed (has grown on me in the last 3 years)

As a long time Vienna player (1. e4 e5 2. Nc3) in the last year or so I've been exploring alternatives against 1. e4 e5 without venturing into mainstream Italian, Scotch or Spanish waters. I've tried the Belgrade Gambit, Bishop's Gambit and Center Game. The first two have entire books devoted to them, but both involve pawn sacrifices and are therefore highly speculative by nature, and for the time being you will be largely on your own if you try the Center Game, though I understand there is a book in the works. So the fact that this book on Ponziani's has just come out, and that it does not require a speculative pawn sacrifice, caused me to give it a try. Dave Taylor had previously written "Ponziani Power" a decided labor of love, and yet does not allow his passion for his favored opening taint his objectivity, for instance in concluding that the line 3...d5 4. Bb5? is just bad for White.
Besides the main responses 3...d5 and 3...Nf6, this book does not skimp on some of the less common responses, for instance with 25 pages on 3...f5 which indeed is the line I'd try as Black since not only do I play 1. e4 but I also defend it with 1...e5. One of my only gripes thus far is that in the line 3...Nf6 4. d4 Nxe4 5. d5 Ne7 6. Nxe5 Ng6, the move 7. Nxg6 is dismissed with ?! which I consider an incorrect evaluation. The problem is the authors only consider 7...hxg6 and then either 8. Qe2?! or 8. Bd3?! (those are my ?! in these cases), but the correct move can be extrapolated from other variations given by the authors, particularly 7. Qf3 Qe7 where the author's write that gives White "a small but solid edge, by weakening Black's kingside pawn structure" with 8. Nxg6. So why doesn't that likewise apply to the immediate 7. Nxg6?! Indeed after 7. Qf3 Qe7 8. Nxg6 hxg6 the authors give 9. Be3 and I would hereby like to recommend that the same is the correct move after 7. Nxg6 hxg6: 8. Be3! in which case 8...Qe7 9. Qf3 transposes, or 9. Qd3 is quite playable, the idea being that, unlike the lines 7. Nxg6 hxg6 8. Qe2?! or 8. Bd3?! quick Queenside development by White, culminating in Nd2 (after Be3 and Queen out), and if ...Nxd2 then Kxd2 and White's queen rook is ready to come to the open e-file with significant impact.
I do have another specific gripe but I want to preface it by saying this -- ALL opening books have their shortcomings. And this is actually one of the better opening books I've read lately, and bear in mind, I've now switched to where I'm more concerned with what to play against the Ponziani than actually playing it. Long story short the book leaves out the following line, but I've checked my database and it only shows three games ever, and all of those in the last half of last decade. So probably no opening book has ever covered the following, the specific line being 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. c3 Nf6 4. d4 exd4 5. e5 Ne4 6. Qe2 f5 7. exf6 d5 8. Nbd2 Qxf6 9. Nxe4 dxe4 10. Qxe4 and now 10...Qe7. Not saying it's an especially good line -- the queen-less middle-game that can arise after 10. Qxe4+ is surprisingly difficult to counter -- but it is a possibility.
Now that Carlsen has played the Ponziani I can heartily recommend this book to people considering this opening. It is in general very thorough, and although there are always things to be discovered, this book is seldom if every glaringly wrong as some others in the Everyman Chess series can be. Like all such opening books it should be read critically, but when you do so, you realize just how good this book is.
