Ralph Hughes, former DW/BI practice manager for a leading global systems integrator, has led numerous BI programs and projects for Fortune 500 companies in aerospace, government, telecom, and pharmaceuticals. A certified Scrum Master and a PMI Project Management Professional, he began developing an agile method for data warehouse 15 years ago, and was the first to publish books on the iterative solutions for business intelligence projects. He is a veteran trainer with the world's leading data warehouse institute and has instructed or coached over 1,000 BI professionals worldwide in the discipline of incremental delivery of large data management systems.
A frequent keynote speaker at business intelligence and data management events, he serves as a judge on emerging technologies award panels and program advisory committees of advanced technology conferences. He holds BA and MA degrees from Stanford University where he studied computer modeling and econometric forecasting. A co-inventor of Zuzena, the automated testing engine for data warehouses, he serves as Chief Systems Architect for Ceregenics and consults on agile projects internationally.

A "must have" for all DWBI professionals

This book by Ralph Hughes should be on the desks of anyone working with data warehousing and business intelligence (DWBI). There is a learning curve and challenges to working with Scrum - for example calculating the velocity of a new team - or - establishing the level of detail in an action plan - or - determining the specific responsibilities of various team members. Ralph does not "touch on" the topic but rather "dives in" and explores it thoroughly - providing you with the recipe as well as the ingredients for success. This level of rigor and diligence is also representative of his approach to the development of this book. The content in this book is based on real world experiences that Ralph has traveled the world to gather. Buy this book if you want to learn - and want to know how to deploy - agile project management techniques in your data warehouse business intelligence (DWBI) program.
If there is one other thing to say about Ralph (and this book) it is that the material is viable and current. The material in this book is not based on ideas from ten years ago but in fact ideas that are viable today and most likely will be equally viable ten years from now.

Ralph Hughes' Agile Data Warehouse Project Management (ISBN: 978-0-12-396463-2) addresses the challenge of managing a data warehouse project and asserts that agile techniques can be used to successfully drive warehousing projects.
Data warehousing projects are different than other software development projects and, as such, should be approached using different development and management techniques and processes. The book is not another "what is data warehousing" book nor is it another "agile development" book. Instead, it marries the two together and shows the reader how data warehousing can succeed using agile project management techniques (such as Scrum).
The author explains how a project team using Scrum can help to achieve a quicker time to delivery and reduced costs -- the holy grail of project management. Anyone who has worked on a data warehousing project knows that it can be a monumental undertaking. Agile Data Warehouse Project Management by Ralph Hughes (published in 2013) offers up an approach that can minimize challenges and improve the chance of successful delivery.
