About the Author
Glenn Doman received his degree in physical therapy from the University of Pennsylvania in 1940. From that point on, he began pioneering the field of child brain development. In 1955, he founded The Institutes' world-renowned work with brain-injured children had led to vital discoveries regarding the growth and development of well children. The author has lived with, studied, and worked with children in more than one hundred nations, ranging from the most civilized to the most primitive. Me gusto mucho. Explica el porque y como puede un niño de 2 años, tocar el violín, leer y/o aprender matemáticas.
Con una explicación entendible y sostenida por su propia experiencia científica y la fisiología, describe porque se puede y debe estimular desde el nacimiento a los niños, ya que su cerebro está preparado.
Es algo que sabemos pero muchas veces no aplicamos, bajo la idea de que aun no están preparados; y lo están!

In Was Huck Black?, Fishkin combines close readings of published and unpublished writing by Twain with intensive biographical and historical research and insights gleaned from linguistics, literary theory, and folklore to shed new light on the role African-American voices played in the genesis of Huckleberry Finn. Given that book's importance in American culture, her analysis illuminates, as well, how African-American voices have shaped our sense of what is distinctively "American" about American literature.
Fishkin shows that Mark Twain was surrounded, throughout his life, by richly talented African-American speakers whose rhetorical gifts Twain admired candidly and profusely. A black child named Jimmy whom Twain called "the most artless, sociable and exhaustless talker I ever came across" helped Twain understand the potential of a vernacular narrator in the years before he began writing Huckleberry Finn, and served as a model for the voice with which Twain would transform American literature. A slave named Jerry whom Twain referred to as an "impudent and satirical and delightful young black man" taught Twain about "signifying"--satire in an African-American vein--when Twain was a teenager (later Twain would recall that he thought him "the greatest man in the United States" at the time). Other African-American voices left their mark on Twain's imagination as well--but their role in the creation of his art has never been recognized. Was Huck Black? adds a new dimension to current debates over multiculturalism and the canon.
American literary historians have told a largely segregated story: white writers come from white literary ancestors, black writers from black ones. The truth is more complicated and more interesting. While African-American culture shaped Huckleberry Finn, that novel, in turn, helped shape African-American writing in the twentieth century. As Ralph Ellison commented in an interview with Fishkin, Twain "made it possible for many of us to find our own voices."
Was Huck Black? dramatizes the crucial role of black voices in Twain's art, and takes the first steps beyond traditional cultural boundaries to unveil an American literary heritage that is infinitely richer and more complex than we had thought.

Elaborating on a thesis that made news last summer, Fishkin, professor of American Studies at the University of Texas, convincingly argues that Mark Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was influenced by African American voices. Mixing historical and literary research with close analysis of Twain's writings, Fishkin cites a newly discovered 1874 article by Twain that describes his encounter with a black child whose voice was later echoed by Huck; she also assesses the impact of his childhood friendship with a "signifying" slave named Jerry. Fishkin suggests Twain's blending of black and white voices was unconscious and maintains that his portrayal of "nigger" Jim was more subversive than racist. Though the book seems mainly aimed at academics, it also considers the question of whether Huckleberry Finn should be taught in high school. Black students might now more easily identify with Huck, Fishkin states, but the major African American figure remains the minstrel-voiced Jim. Therefore, she suggests that teachers also expose students to more powerful black voices, such as those of Frederick Douglass and Sojourner Truth. Illustrations not seen by PW.

Fishkin (American studies, Univ. of Texas, Austin) argues compellingly that an 1874 sketch by Mark Twain, about the black ten-year-old "Sociable Jimmy," served as the model for Huck Finn's African American-rooted dialect--along with "A True Story" (1874), based on a tale by an ex-slave, Mary Ann Cord. There was also a slave Twain knew in boyhood, Jerry, who taught him the African American art of "signifying" satire. Twain's genius with vernacular has always been acknowledged, but Fishkin shows, with formidable scholarship, how black speech (and life) influenced white culture and how, in American literature, the Twain do indeed meet. Direct, brief, well-informed, and polemical (``How will Americans respond to the news that Huck...was part black?''), Fishkin (American Studies/University of Texas, Austin) provides a questionable but dramatic genealogy of Huckleberry Finn's African- American ancestors as a gesture toward ``desegregating'' American literary history. Inspired by David Bradley's 1985 lecture, ``The First `Nigger' Novel,'' Fishkin argues that the prototypical American literary hero in what major writers have considered the archetypal American novel was based on a black child named Sociable Jimmy; that Twain's language (``raised to a level of literary eloquence,'' as Ralph Ellison said in 1970) is derived from African-American voices; and that his satirical social style was inspired by a black boy named Jerry whom he knew while still a child. But although Twain enjoyed black culture enough to appropriate it for his writings, he repressed the sources because, Fishkin says, he wanted to be respectable--and in the age of p.c. (of which this study is a monumental example), that makes Twain a hypocrite, a character-type that he himself found particularly contemptuous. To prove that an imaginary hero in a work of art (or even a popular commercial novel, as Huckleberry Finn was originally conceived) is multiracial, multicultural, even androgynous, would be to explain his perennial appeal. But Fishkin treats the novel and its lead character as a social commentary or textbook, referring often to its presentation in the classroom and shaping her argument for literary critics. Isolating Huck's African-American traits--some based on stereotypes, others uncovered through sophisticated linguistic analysis--seems to create its own form of segregation, to oversimplify a complex literary character, and to compromise the universality to which a wide range of authors (whom Fishkin quotes) have paid tribute--authors such as Ellison, Faulkner, Hemingway, Toni Morrison, and others, who claim to have learned their language and acquired their voices from Twain. Twain's masterpiece has been reviled as a racist rant; parents have tried to get it banned from school libraries, and people have claimed that not only is the book racist, so is its author. But Twain was hardly a racist; Jim is presented as one of the few characters in the book who has real dignity, humanity and common goodness; and Huck learns to see Jim as a friend and a fellowman. But how does Huck reach this epiphany and who did Twain base his character on? In a solidly researched and fascinating book, Shelly Fishkin posits that Huck was based on two young African-Americans Twain knew personally, one a ten year old boy named Jimmy and the other a young slave in Missouri named Jerry.

Jimmy was described in Twain's newspaper article "Sociable Jimmy", which was published in The New York Times in November of 1874. Jimmy's family was employed in a village inn where Twain was staying, and Twain was clearly fascinated by "the most artless, sociable and exhaustless talker I ever came across... I listened as one who receives a revelation." Twain invited Jimmy to sit and chat, and Jimmy planked himself down in an easy chair and proceeded to regale Twain with stories about his family in the inn; in particular, their aversion to having cats around. "When dey ketches a cat bummin' aroun' heah... dey snake him into de cistern -- dey's been cats drownded in dat water dat's in yo' pitcher. I seed a cat in dare yistiddy -- all swelled up like a pudd'n." (Imagine the look on Twains face as Jimmy fed him this tidbit.) As Fishkin shows, Jimmy and Huck share some key characteristics. They both launch into long family narratives to hold their listener's attention. They both have a visceral loathing of violence and cruelty, and they speak with a remarkable similarity. The are both "unpretentious, uninhibited, easily impressed and unusually loquacious." When we close our eyes and listen to Jimmy, we can easily hear Huck in Jimmy's voice.

Jerry was young black man in the 1850's who Twain idolized when he was himself a teenager, much to the dismay and disgust of Twain's mother. Actually, Mom could be a stand-in for Tom Sawyer's Aunt Polly, who didn't want Tom associating with Huck because he was unwashed, uncouth, and the envy of every boy in the neighborhood of good family who admired him and wished they dared to be like him. Here we see Huck as Jerry. Jerry was a master at "signifying", or indirectly satirizing whatever he held in contempt. There is a lot of Jerry in the characters of both Huck and Jim, who compensate for their lack of formal education with a large store of mother-wit and down to earth common sense.

We don't know if Twain directly based Huck on Jimmy and/or Jerry, and it may be impossible to determine for certain. But there are enough similarities in all three characters to make the point that Twain thoroughly liked and respected both Jimmy and Jerry, and turned some of the best qualities of each of them into one of the most endearing and enduring people in all of American fiction.

Ignore the Kirkus Review above...

The high-toned wording of the Kirkus Review might just turn you off of the this book before having given it a chance... and that would be a great loss. I've read the review three times now and I still can't tell if it is praising the book or condemning it. Ms. Fisher-Fishkin's prose is very readable and this book can be enjoyed by plain ol' Twain fans and academia alike.

Fascinating Read for Twainophiles

Mark Twain offers this explanatory at the beginning of "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn":

IN THIS BOOK a number of dialects are used, to wit: the Missouri negro dialect; the extremest form of the backwoods Southwestern dialect; the ordinary "Pike County" dialect; and four modified varieties of this last. The shadings have not been done in a haphazard fashion, or by guesswork; but painstakingly, and with the trustworthy guidance and support of personal familiarity with these several forms of speech.

I make this explanation for the reason that without it many readers would suppose that all these characters were trying to talk alike and not succeeding.

THE AUTHOR.

I have been teaching this book to high school sophomores for thirty years, and I always took Twain at his word. And critics have long supported--and praised--Twain's use of dialect in this greatest of American novels. However, in "Was Huck Black?" Fishkin makes a substantial case that Twain infused Huck's language with the vernacular of Black influences.

It is a fascinating read. The book breaks down into four parts:

Part One: Jimmy - This is a reference to Twain's publication of an article in 1874 entitled "Sociable Jimmy," based on a "bright, simple, guileless little darkey boy...." It was the first of Twain's published writings to be dominated by the voice of a child.

Part Two: Jerry - This refers to s boyhood slave acquaintance of Twain's. Fishkin quotes from Twain's essay "Corn-Pone Opinions" about Jerry: "He was a gay and impudent and satirical and delightful young black man--a slave--who daily preached sermons from the top of his master's woodpile, with me for the sole audience."

Part Three: Jim - This section deals with the possible origins of the character of Jim in "Huck Finn."

Part Four: Break Dancing in the Drawing Room - Here Fishkin writes of Twain's introduction of Huck as the "author" of his new novel, thereby allowing Huck to (in Fishkin's words): "...enter the drawing room uninvited and unannounced and start talking immediately--coarse talk, irreverent talk, black talk."

Nearly half of the book's 270 pages are notes (72p), works cited (29p.), and index (18p.). It also includes a reprinting of the 1874 article "Sociable Jimmy" that Twain wrote for the New York Times.

While Fishkin's book will probably have an appeal only to the most devout of Mark Twain's fans, her writing style is easily understood and provides a greater understanding of Twain's use of dialect. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Excellent Reading with Good Illustrations of the Theories

Prerequisites: Knowledge in Electricity and magnetism, Quantum Mechanics, optics and semiconductor physics. Math: Pre-calculus or preferably calculus. This book is definitely an upper division engineering reading. The theories of photovoltaics are explained quite well from the semiconductor level to applying it at this system level. The author quantifies the theories such that the designer can optimize and validate his or her work. The only drawback of this book, it did not give examples of calculations of the important equations and it was written mostly for Australia in mind. Although, the book did illustrate many pictures and graphs to help the user to get a relatively good feeling of the theories presented. This book is purely technical and does not discuss some of the other issues pertaining in connecting solar to the grid especially here in the USA. I gave the book 4 stars as it is excellent reading and gave relevant illustrations, however, it lacked sample calculations to better validate its theories.

Good book.

I was looking for a textbook/reference on solar panels, not semiconductor physics of PN junction. This book was the closest thing.

This book contains a lot of information beyond semiconductor physics. Yes, it has a chapter on PN junctions/photodiodes, it explains just enough to understand how the cells work, and presents the important IV equations.

What I like about the book is that it gives lots of information on array sizing, construction of solar panels, and real issues about solar panels.

I recommend it as an intermediate textbook, or a reference.

Here are included basic rituals, methods of consecration, of invocation of elements and elementals, the Mass of the Phoenix and the Gnostic Mass, and the sublime "Vision and the Voice." Also included is a section on sex magick Gems from the Equinox focuses on the techniques for the achievement of ecstasy, the attainment of Godhead. Aleister Crowley is the major philosopher of the occult during the first half of the 20th century, and one of the world's great mystics. Israel Regardie, a former secretary of Crowley's, has written a biography of him (Eye in the Triangle, Llewellyn, 1971) and is in addition a respected student of the occult-a man, in short, perfectly suited to distill the essence of the Equinox.

The prettiest edition of this book by far!

This is a review of the Llewellyn Publishing 1974 1st Edition of "Gems From The Equinox."

There are currently 3 editions to this book. Differences in content(if any) have not been noted.

This first edition's binding is superior in many ways to many of the others. This 1st edition is Smythe-Sewn, and has a lovely gloss red leatherette cover that has held up for almost 40 years. The silver lettering on the cover and spine really "pop" on the red leatherette. Issued with no D/J. The prettiest edition of this book ever issued.

The 2nd Edition 1st PrintingGems From The Equinox: Instructions by Aleister Crowley from his own Magical Order has a canvas spine and thick cardboard covers. The 2nd and 3rd printings have a grey/black laminate hardcover glued back which have a tendency to split on the spine. The 1st Printing is Smythe-Sewn, the 2nd and 3rd Printings are glue-bound-- this is to say that the backing/spine of the 1st Printing is very durable where the 2nd & 3rd Printings have a tendency to split at a point that is multiply opened, whereas the Smythe-Sewn edition will lay flat and open. The 2nd and 3rd Printings have a non-flexible cardboard spine and should be avoided.

The 3rd Edition Gems from the Equinox: Instructions by Aleister Crowley for His Own Magical Order falls somewhere between the 1st Edition and the 2nd Edition 1st Printing in quality. It is a burgundy red leatherette hardback, flexible spine and Smythe-sewn. Not quite as pretty as the Llewellyn edition, but quite durable, and a good price for the student.

It is this 1st edition that most collectors will eventually find that they want -- the 1974 Llewellyn Red Leatherette; it's eye-popping red color and gold leaf on the spine makes is a beautiful edition. This 1st edition is often a little more expensive; The New Falcon 2nd edition is not as pretty but it is just as durable.

Be careful which edition you choose. Compare prices. Compare sellers. Ask for photos. There are some bargains to be found in this title, choose carefully: This is *one* book on Magick that you will want to keep the rest of your life-- careful selection of available editions and printings will ensure you'll find a copy that will last you that long.

Outdated, shallow, not worth 1% of its price...

I finished reading this book in two hours time. My first thought after finishing it was "is this the book I spent $12.21 + shipping?":

1. The book's edition is 2003. This was when Windows XP was available in the market. The information presented in the book is about Win98. Even the screenshots are from Internet Explorer 4. There are even references to Win95 and NT.
2. The book presents how to use the so-called "hacking programs". If you can speak English (at least you are reading these lines), I think a button on a program interface labeled "Start Server" gives you enough information about what that particular button will do. This means, you will not have to read something like 30 pages out of 139.
3. The book gives you the source code of "I love you" virus and explains briefly the functions and subs on the code. Again, if you can speak English, you can perfectly understand a call in the function saying regcreate (create an entry in the registry) listadriv (list a drive) etc. There is no need to speak about what to source code does. This information covers about 10 pages. So, together with item 2, you do not need 40 pages out of 139.
4. "I love you" virus (a.k.a. LoveLetter) was in effect in the year 2000. Then there was Melissa and other virii & trojans around upto 2003. The book mentions none of them.
5. The book only gives the explanation of the LoveLetter virus. This is a macro virus. What about other types of viruses? There is no single line about "Terminate but Stay Resident (TSR)". How can you speak about virii without mentioning TSR? This is the only explanation why people do not see the virii present in their computers when they check the running processes.
6. The book is totally about Windows Operating System. There are some references to Unix/Linux like "Don't utilize Win on your server, consider Unix/Linux". Can N*X systems be referred like that? Apache, holding the majority of the web servers, are referred to as "Apache is one of the best you can get"! Sorry, but there is something wrong here.
7. The book's name is "Important Hacking and Security Informations for Every Internet User". Let me tell you the information contained in this book about the title: If you are webmaster, put password-protected files in .htaccess. If you are a user, do not download files from unknown/untrusted sources, use a firewall, do not trust people you met on the internet. I hope I am not violating any rights of the author/publisher by summarizing the book in two sentences.

I am not a cracker. I am just a person you would consider as a "computer guy". Even for a person like me, this book is "superlight". If you are reading some computer magazines like Chip or PCWorld or the like, then do not bother yourself buying this book. You are probably knowing more than everything written in the book.

I can't believe myself that I bought this book!

The book is ok. It's great for beginners and it gives a quick background on various hacking subjects. People will probably expect the book to be an in-depth book but at 150 or so pages, it is just not possible. This book won't teach you HOW TO HACK -- I think it's illegal for any book to give step by step instructions on how to hack. Instead of instructions, the books offers background and "educational" information on how hacking works, how viruses work, etc.

Overall, I found the book very informative especially if you are a beginner. If you are a hacking expert I do not recommend buying this book. But if, you are like me, who is totally clueless on how hacking works then this book is good. It took about 2-3 weeks for me to get the book. I'm not sure why the other posters said they didn't get theirs, perhaps it's a mail problem? I'm sure Amazon.com will not sell a book if they're not going to ship it. I give this book 4 stars. If there are more pages to it, I'll give it 5.

Before purchase of this book, I too had read the negative reviews with no fulfillment, never got the book, its a scam kind of feedback. Yes this book is for beginners and was never advertised as anything more from what I can tell? As an individual who represents the Hacker Community from the usual base of ignorance,this is a non-objective first timers look at Hacker methodology, not a cut and dry way to hack?(good or bad)

Take it for what it is... a way for the curious to understand more of this often misunderstood world. Got the book timely, support was significant...enough said?

In this book about the darker side of technology's impact on our lives, Alan Cooper begins by explaining that unlike other devices throughout history, computers have a "meta function:" an unwanted, unforeseen option that users may accidentally invoke with what they thought was a normal keystroke. Cooper details many of these meta functions to explain his central thesis: programmers need to seriously reevaluate the many user-hostile concepts deeply embedded within the software development process.

Rather than provide users with a straightforward set of options, programmers often pile on the bells and whistles and ignore or deprioritize lingering bugs. For the average user, increased functionality is a great burden, adding to the recurrent chorus that plays, "computers are hard, mysterious, unwieldy things." (An average user, Cooper asserts, who doesn't think that way or who has memorized all the esoteric commands and now lords it over others, has simply been desensitized by too many years of badly designed software.)

Cooper's writing style is often overblown, with a pantheon of cutesy terminology (i.e., "dancing bearware") and insider back-patting. (When presenting software to Bill Gates, he reports that Gates replied: "How did you do that?" to which he writes, "I love stumping Bill!") More seriously, he is also unable to see beyond software development's importance--a sin he accuses programmers of throughout the book.

Even with that in mind, the central questions Cooper asks are too important to ignore: Are we making users happier? Are we improving the process by which they get work done? Are we making their work hours more effective? Cooper looks to programmers, business managers, and what he calls "interaction designers" to question current assumptions and mindsets. Plainly, he asserts that the goal of computer usage should be "not to make anyone feel stupid." Good Book for Understanding Challenges of Designing User Friendly Technologies

While I agree with many things Alan Cooper says about the challenges of designing user friendly technologies for normal end users, I think his attitude is a bit pessimistic about how engineers and programmers design technologies that are yet to come... I think it is better to encourage Universities and Colleges to require a certain amount of technical support and customer support courses in additional to standard social sciences courses required for a typical science major for Engineering and computer science students to graduate... This should also be required for any student who hopes to get into any field of study where work in this field would affect end users of products and services rendered to them. Engineers and Technical workers need to take responsibility for their work and help end users with their products. Furthermore, licensing for Engineers and Technical workers should not only require ability to design products and technologies (i.e. traditional assessment materials), but also require ability to communicate effectively with end users and support their products and technologies. This might be a great book for young students in high school and college who want to study Engineering, IT Services, Computer Sciences or related fields.

Read it for the smart stuff, but ignore the stupid stuff

The author has a lot of important things to say about the importance of design in software, and the many ways in which good design is sabotaged by management, programmers, deadlines, conventional thinking, tradition, lethargy, and sloth. Fighting these influences to achieve excellently designed products is incredibly important, and incredibly difficult, and the author makes this case well.

Where he goes totally off the rails is when he attacks stereotypes instead of people. He claims that every programmer thinks that he is different and can cross between coding and interaction design -- but none of them can. It turns out that he means that he was the first, and the last, one to be able to do so, because he is God. He claims that graphic designers are there to pretty up an interaction designers designs -- while ignoring the true amount of collaboration that has to be achieved between graphic design, interaction design, and programming to achieve any excellent software. His solution to bad design is to listen to nobody but the designer. (He never mentions the possibility of a subpar interaction designer.)

Finally he spends a lot of time attacking various management structures that are found at Microsoft and companies who mimic Microsoft. Well, I have worked in the NYC tech scene for 20+ years, and nobody here gives a damn about Microsoft's management practices. In the years since the book came out, it has turned out that nobody anywhere cares about Microsoft management practices anymore. It just felt like another rant about something that is relevant to nobody.

But if you wade through the extremist ranting, there really are useful messages and examples throughout the book. It's worth reading if you're in the business of making software.

Wonderful book describing the value of interaction design!

Well worth it! Having been in the IT industry for over 20 years I have seen the "old" models that Alan describes so well - where the engineers are asked to "design" and control the UX/UI. I have done this myself as an engineer and as a PM - and not having the right UX/UI vision I can attest that it was a terrible idea. I have seen how valuable interaction design in at my most recent gigs and how much it simplifies work for us business and product managers leaving the work of UX/UI to trained professionals. Alan makes a compelling case on why that should be so.

Natural remedy

When downloading this book, I couldn’t believe I the details the writer gives about this wonderful tea. I thought It would just contain info on different kinds of the tree and perhaps different ways of preparation of the tea. I had no idea it was a forbidden ingredient in so many countries and that there are strict laws against any use of it. It is really sad, since, natural is almost always right and would never create something that could hurt us. Kraton is a natural stimulant and a pain killer. I wish pharmaceutical companies would be more interested in it and its incredible potentials.

A very good staring point

I had never ever heard of Kratom. I have a highly stressful job and was looking for relief with the anxiety my job is causing me and someone recommended Kratom so I had to research this powerful medicinal plant. Well, anything you want to know about it is in this book. From the history, origin, and description to the effects, benefits, preparation, processing, dosage, and most importantly special precautions. It is a fascinating plant and I will probably continue to research it before I buy some, but this book is a very good starting point.

Whether you’re new to Kratom you’re probably always curious on how to understand this amazing compound.
