From the Author
Ian Hall; "I feel there's not enough 'old-fashioned' hard Science Fiction out there anymore. You know, the likes of Asimov's Foundation, Clarke's 2001: A Space Odyssey, Heinlein's Starship Troopers. These classic lines have been taken over by too many dark dystopias, end-of-the-world doomsday books and zombie apocalypses. When we started the Star-Eater Chronicles, we wanted a hard-hitting fast-paces space series with aliens, invasions and good, old-fashioned heroes. We hope we hit the mark."Dennis E. Smirl; "I like Space Opera, and to get my teeth into a series featuring rockets and ray guns was right up my alley. We loved both writing the books and the writing/partnership experience. I feel there's no change of voice from Ian's writing to mine, and if we enjoyed doing it, we feel it comes out in the finished product. Belt up tight, this is a wild ride."

From the Back Cover
The Star-Eater world....In ancient days before humans spread their populace to the stars, a company that got too big for its britches would find the Government gently reining it in or roughly shackling it down. And when a company got too big for Government oversight, usually its own weight would cause an implosion; the force of natural expansion and demise. When a company gets bigger than its Government, then you have a problem on your hands. The MacCollie Company got bigger than that: they ruled travel to the stars. The development of the L-Space drive--the first practical FTL drive--created a monopoly that allowed access to the stars only to those the MacCollie company felt they could trust. At first, they trusted only the Government--the Fellowship of Humanity. Slowly, carefully, cautiously, they expanded access to a few independent businesses, and the race to colonize other worlds took shape. That put Earth's problems in a new light. When you're orbiting Aldebaran three checking for possibilities of Terra-forming, a flood in Bangladesh seems a long, long way away.Of course, even with the L-Space drive, interstellar space travel was in its infancy. It took twelve years to reach Earth's nearest neighbor, Alpha Centauri. With the advances in drive technology, it took only took four years to reach Lushman 16. It took a mere six months to orbit the planets of Epsilon Eridani. Yeah, we humans are good that way; give us a problem, and we'll work it out. But let's get distances into perspective... Our galaxy is 200,000 light years in diameter. Flying at Light Speed (LS), to get to the nearest edge would still take us 87,000 years. Then Hector Faber (a MacCollie scientist, of course) discovered and developed the H-20 Drive; capable of faster than light speed by quite a bit. As usual, Earth politicians took two years to decide what to call it; the 'H-2O Drive', the Faber Drive, but the pilots were way ahead of them. The invention was Faber's, the process was simply called FTL-VII (Faster Than Light, Version II). Yeah, it didn't make a dent in those Galactic-Edge distances, but it sure sped up travel in the Fellowship Worlds. Thanks to MacCollie, planets were colonized tout suite! When MacCollie Scout Benjamin Steele discovered "jump holes", it was the time to head into the unknown en mass. Basically rips in time and space which, like a star, seemed to exhibit long stable periods, they transported FTL material across huge distances in an instant. MacCollie jumped at the opportunity like only they could. In a year they manufactured 1000 Survey-Scouts, recruited 1000 pilots, and fired them to every corner of the Milky Way. Enter our hero... Seth Gingko.

superb sci-fi
By Isis the Vampire
This series is imaginative and exciting. Mix a bit of Andromeda Ascendant with a lot more snark, a Malcolm Reynolds- type captain, aliens, hardcore sci-fi, and bad luck and you have an idea about the series.

but a fun read.
By Ronald G. Bailey
It's an old fashioned space opera; not too much on character development, but a fun read.

Morrie Schwartz -- A Teacher to the Last
By Donald Mitchell
This wonderful book focuses on the meaning of life, from the perspective of a teacher (Morrie Schwartz) who is about to lose his life and his pupil, (Mitch Albom) who has lost his focus on what is important. They come together for 14 Tuesdays (just like they did while the author was a college student at Brandeis) before the professor passes away of ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease).

This book is filed with the most beautiful sayings you can imagine. Here are a few examples: 'Giving to other people is what makes us feel alive.' 'Love each other or perish.' 'Everybody knows they are going to die, but nobody believes it. If we did, we would do things differently.' 'Learn to detach from experience.'

Many people would avoid a book on this subject, because they do not want to think about death. Although Morrie Schwartz is dying throughout this book, the subject is really about living rather than dying. Few will find the dying to be distressing, even though it is graphically and frequently addressed.

For those of us with many years to live, this book can be a wake-up call to start really living now -- in the ways we would if we were about to die, as well as to learn how to treat others while we still have them with us. For those who have but little time left, this book can be an inspiration for how to get the most out of the remaining time.

You will probably find it heart-warming (as I did) to find out that the advance on this book was paid in time to help defray some of Professor Schwartz's medical expenses.

May you find new meaning in your life from reading this wonderful book! Life is a teacher, and Morrie Schwartz's thoughts can be a text to help you understand the lessons.

How and why being "fully charged" can help to eliminate all limits that are self-imposed
By Robert Morris
Humans need to be re-charged as do the marvelous electronic devices on which many of us now depend. In fact, an abundance of recent and extensive research by Anders Ericsson and his associates at Florida State University (among others) indicates that -- on average -- peak performers require at least eight hours of rest (including sleep) and that is true of athletes as well as of performing artists. With rare exception, they must also commit at least 10,000 hours of highly disciplined practice under strict, expert supervision.

In his latest book, Tom Rath identifies three "keys" that can help almost anyone to re-energize both their attitude and their effort: They believe they are doing something that will benefit others, they are creating many more positive rather than negative moments (for others as well as for themselves), and they are making choices that can help to improve their mental, emotional, and spiritual as well as physical health.

In this context, I am reminded of an incident that occurred long ago after Ralph Waldo Emerson explained transcendentalism to those who filled a church in Concord, Massachusetts. He had agreed to answer a few questions. An elderly farmer, hat in hand, stood up. "Mr. Emerson, I have a question." Emerson smiled. "Sir, how do you transcend an empty stomach?"

I agree with Rath that, with all due respect to the importance of rigorous and sufficient practice and of rising above trivial and temporary irritations, we must also replenish our sources of energy in terms of rest, as mentioned, but also nutrition and physical exercise. Most important of all, we must develop the right mindset.

In Part I, for example, Rath suggests HOW to (a) create meaning with small wins by abandoning the relentless pursuit of "happiness," (b) get a charge from within by pursuing "life, liberty, and meaningfulness," (c) make work a purpose, not just a place, (d) avoid upward comparison by preventing money from killing meaning and purpose, (e) "double down on your talents," leveraging them now, and serving wherever and whenever you and your talents are needed, (f) cast a shadow rather than existing in one by converting your dream into a job, (g) put purpose before business by focusing on less to achieve more, and (h) use purpose to avoid stagnation and decay. He also includes specific "Ideas for Action" on Page 160.

o The Three Keys to a Full Charge (Pages 7-8)
o Abandon the Pursuit of Happiness (13-14)
o Get a Charge from Within (19-22)
o Go Beyond Engagement (29-30)
o Avoid Upward Comparison (33-34)
o Double Down on Your Talents (40-41)
o Craft Your Dream Into Your Job (48-50)
o Focus on Less to Do More (54-56)
o Since Pavlov's Bell (56-59)
o Keep Your Mission in Mind (64-67)
o Focus on the Frequency (75-77)

o At Least Pay Attention (82-83)
Note: Rath makes an excellent point: "Even when you can't say something nice, go ahead and say something. Contrary to what I as told growing up, negative comments are less harmful than ignoring someone...Even negative feedback is better than nothing at all."

o Use Questions to Spark Conversation (86-89)
o Want What You Already Have (94-95)
o Used Pro-Social Incentives (108-109)
o Develop the Ultimate Strength (115-116)
o Use Short-Term Thinking for Better Health (121-123)
o Set Better Defaults (129-130)
o Keep Sitting from Sapping Your Energy (134-136)
o Fight Light, Heat, and Noise (143-144)
o Avoid Secondhand Stress (147-149)
o Push "Pause" Before Responding (153-154)

Rath encourages those who read this book to embrace opportunities to establish habits that will nourish their mental, physical, and emotional health. That sounds easy, doesn't it? Well, having helped to pave several roads to hell with my good intentions, I have found it very difficult. Steven Wright once observed, "You can't have everything. Where would you put it?" That's true. However, most of us can have much better health than we have now.

Toward the end of his book, Rath suggests: "Start with work that creates meaning. Invest in each interaction to strengthen your relationships. Make sure you have the energy you need to do your best. Doing these three things, in combination, is the definition of being charged and adding a positive charge to those around you." Quite true. Energizing others - business associates, family members, neighbors, and friends -- will be one of the best ways to energize yourself.

I think this is the most important book Tom Rath has written (at least thus far) because, in my opinion, the material he provides will have greater practical value to more people if (HUGE "if") they read and then re-read Pages 3-161 with appropriate care before proceeding through Part A in the "Tools and Resources" section that follows. (Additional resources and PDF discussion guides for groups, teams, and organizations are available at tom.rath.org. Please take full advantage of the supplementary benefits they offer.) This book may well save your life. I am certain that it can at least make your life happier, healthier, and more productive. What are you waiting for?

I have read most of Tom’s books. So far, my favorite has been Eat Move Sleep. (btw, my kids love The Rechargeables, an illustrated version for kids)
Are You Fully Charged? is a very good read and while it covers some of Eat Move Sleep ideas (particularly in the “energy” section), it feels like a more “complete” book. Basically, the idea is that while it’s important to make right choices about moving, eating and sleeping, that is really not enough. To experience what Tom calls, “full charge”, you have to also create meaning on everyday basis (he defines “meaning” as doing something of the benefit to other people). And, you need to focus on improving your everyday ratio of positive to negative interactions. Like his other books, this integrates a lot of research (over 200 references). I am also looking forward to seeing the film that will be related to the book. I saw the trailer on Tom’s website and it looks pretty interesting.
I am recommending the book wholeheartedly. I am knocking half a star away for the length – the book could be a little longer.

A Great "Life Audit" Book to Make Sure Your Life is Fully Charged
By Charlene Li
I love Tom's books because they are so actionable. While the book is a structured to be a great read from front to back, I took a different approach. I read through the first chapter (5 pages), and then went to the back of the book where there are recaps and discussion questions for each chapter. I flagged a few that looked interesting, and then went to read those specific chapters for context on how to make these changes in my life. Inevitably, I'd read adjacent chapters, because they flow so well into each other.

After doing this, I realized that this book is a great way to do an audit on your life, a reminder to examine if you are maximizing it to the fullest. After all, we are on this earth for only a short time. Why not make the best and most of what time we have?

Here are my three favorite chapters, and the daily experiences that I changed as a result of the book.

- Chapter 7: Initiate to Shape the Future. Recap: Instead of responding to every ringing bell, focus on less to do more. The key question: "If you could focus only on a few meaningful things tomorrow, what would they be?"
Like many people, I've fallen for the fallacy known as "Inbox Zero". While I know it's unattainable, I try to read every email and respond to just those that I really need to. But I still don't get the most important things done. I realized that my problem wasn't just reducing distractions, it was creating moments of focusing on meaningful things. I now write down at the start of each day the ONE thing that I look back on and draw satisfaction in doing. Guaranteed way to beat back procrastination as well.

- Chapter 10: Be 80 Percent Positive: Recap: Focus most of your time and attention on what *is* working. Key question: "How can you make sure that people know you are paying attention to their work and efforts?" As a leader at work and at home, it's easy to fall into the trap of being critical. "You didn't make your bed." or "That report is late." Or just as bad, complacent. One of the things I started doing at work is at the start of our team meetings, starting with sharing "Gratitudes", where someone thanks someone else on the team for something that they did. These small recognitions remind us to take a moment from our busy days. The change I've made personally is to drop notes, emails, comments, that show that I appreciate the people around me, rather than just making a mental note.

- Chapter 21: Respond with Resiliency. Recap: Your reaction to a potential stressor is more important than the stressor itself. Question: "How can you reframe stress in a way that adds motivation while decreasing stress?" I have a lot of stressed out people in my life - angst-filled teenagers, commuters on the bus/plane/road, clients, team members, etc. In the first paragraph of the chapter, Tom writes, "Responding to a situation as a stressor will leave you depleted, but reacting to the same event as a challenge could increase your engergy and provide a positive charge." So I've been building in the habit of smiling when I'm met with a stressful event. If nothing else, it disarms the other person, and gives them pause as well.

The International Butter Festival has come to town! When Harlow Torrent, part-time journalist and full-time Slip witch stumbles upon a dead body, frozen and drained of blood, she's pulled into a murder mystery.

Someone has murdered one of the Butter Festival competitors. Was it Zero Bend, punk sculptor extraordinaire with a history of violence? Perhaps Fusion Swan, a sleazy agent playing the publicity game when his clients meet their untimely end.

Between trying to run her struggling online newspaper, dealing with her highly caffeinated cousins Molly and Luce, fending off three meddling witch mothers who will do anything to get their daughters married off (including drugging food with magic potions) and great Aunt Cass who appears to be running an underground laboratory of some kind, Harlow barely has time to breathe, let alone solve a murder.

Romance certainly isn't on the cards either but the hot scruffy guy new to town seems to have other ideas...

This book is a bad ripoff of the Wicked Witches of the Midwest Series by Amanda M. Lee. Even though the characters are a carbon copy of the originals, the main difference is this book isn't as well written and doesn't contain the humor or snark that the original. It's disappointing that an author has to ripoff another author instead of coming up with original characters.

This was a huge rip off with even blatant nods to another of Amanda Lee's series. It was also a bad rip off. Not well written and flat unlikable characters.

Critical Play: Radical Game Design (MIT Press), by Mary Flanagan

For many players, games are entertainment, diversion, relaxation, fantasy. But what if certain games were something more than this, providing not only outlets for entertainment but a means for creative expression, instruments for conceptual thinking, or tools for social change? In Critical Play, artist and game designer Mary Flanagan examines alternative games -- games that challenge the accepted norms embedded within the gaming industry -- and argues that games designed by artists and activists are reshaping everyday game culture.

Flanagan provides a lively historical context for critical play through twentieth-century art movements, connecting subversive game design to subversive art: her examples of "playing house" include Dadaist puppet shows and The Sims. She looks at artists' alternative computer-based games and explores games for change, considering the way activist concerns -- including worldwide poverty and AIDS -- can be incorporated into game design.

Arguing that this kind of conscious practice -- which now constitutes the avant-garde of the computer game medium -- can inspire new working methods for designers, Flanagan offers a model for designing that will encourage the subversion of popular gaming tropes through new styles of game making, and proposes a theory of alternate game design that focuses on the reworking of contemporary popular game practices.

Review

In Critical Play, Flanagan uncovers a secret history of games buried deep inside folk culture, experimental media, and the world of art. Critical Play should be required reading for anyone who cares about the cultural importance and future potential of games.

Great examination of play and games
By Ron Carter
"Critical Play" is one of those rare books that uncovers a world you never knew existed yet has always lain right before your eyes. I'm a pretty avid gamer, but despite my years spent with mainstream commercial games, it's only recently that I've discovered the serious games movement and designers trying to use games to express big ideas. What I thought was a recent trend, however, Flanagan shows is actually a longstanding, vital tradition. Artists and activists have been using games to communicate social commentary and subvert accepted norms for hundreds of years in an amazing number of ways. "Critical Play" does this incredible job of weaving together games, game theory, art, and activism to show how play can be a vital tool for cultural development.

The book is broken into eight chapters starting with a look at domestic play ranging from subversive dollhouses to players modding the Sims. Other chapters examine board games (apparently artists love chess, I had no idea) language games, and what I was most interested in, computer games. Because I'm somewhat familiar with serious games now, I recognized a number of the examples from the video games chapter. What I didn't know was that there are a number of contemporary artists working with games or making game-inspired pieces. The book concludes with a brief chapter that I wish were longer exploring methods of designing for critical play. While I won't be making a game any time soon, the final chapter helped me understand the game design process better, and I think has allowed me to better read the games I play now.

I picked up this book because I wanted to deepen my understanding of serious games, but I think it can be appreciated by people from all different backgrounds. Whether you're into art history, social change, media theory, or a range of other topics, "Critical Play" offers a unique lens through which you can view historical events and trends and imagine future possibilities. It provides a plethora of ideas to play with, and the understanding that play can be quite serious. I can't recommend it enough.

Critical Play: Radical Game Design
By Karl H. Stingeder
At first glance, games and video games are seen merely as entertainment and/or distraction. Mary Flanagan takes a cultural-historical as well as artistically-tinted look behind the scenes of an otherwise largely one-sided exploration of games and the increasingly popular virtual, electronic forms.

The author approaches the idea of games in a remarkably unconventional manner; in her eyes, games - from the board games, dolls to electronic virtual games of the 20th and 21st centuries - are an expression of cultural norms as well as a reflection of societal unrest. Flanagan even goes so far as to suggest that games can also be interpreted as narrative tools in the sense of social "reflectors". Consequently, games also serve as a means to process social problems, based on the restructuring of the games culture through new games and game styles.

First of all, the book tries to capture the socio-cultural significance of games by means of a well-founded contextualisation exemplified by a few historical milestones of different types and forms of games. There is also an attempt to record the cultural ambivalence of games. For the most part, Flanagan here follows anthropologist Brian Sutton-Smith, who has interpreted games as a narrative form with a catalyst function. According to this, players are able to channel real-world risks, and observe and evaluate these at a safe distance. Games may therefore highlight real problems in their "downplayed" form and can almost be held up as a mirror to the willing "players" showing their own cultural involvement and participation.

Flanagan provides plausible evidence for her theories, from the Dadaist-influenced puppet show of the 20th century to the popular PC series The Sims. Games can be viewed not only as an expression of altered recreational behaviour and technical progress, but also as the transformed self-image of the political function of games. Based on such political and socio-cultural contextualisation, Flanagan ventures to apply her instruments, which results in the concretisation of her game design model named Critical Play. It is interesting to note here that the author only deals with the question of where games start to become critical relatively late i.e. in her last chapter.

In this context, Flanagan is impressed by the ideas of Marshall McLuhan, whom she believes was far ahead of his time in rating the ability of art and games to place human associations into different relationships, including opposing positions. Essentially, Critical Play is thus a normative two-way approach to development. A model, which, based on cultural influences that manifested themselves in the games, pretends that innovative approaches of a "new, critical" game design would be able to challenge established norms and thus create a wider spectrum of the games experience. Peering at the social significance of virtual worlds (Second Life, World of Warcraft, etc.), Flanagan remarks (not without justification) that it is precisely for this reason that video games today are given high significance, as starting points and positions of social interaction and the cultural realm can be seen within them.

Conclusion: Critical Play: Radical Game Design takes some highly interesting games theory approaches and develops them - based on a historically well-founded contextualisation substantiated by plenty of solid and graphic examples - into an innovative methodology of game design. Although peppered with scientific citation (which can, however, be looked up in the appendix for greater reader-friendliness), the paper is clearly structured; the writing style proves simple and comprehensible for the most part. As the work is currently only available in its original version from MIT Press.

Fascinating history of play and excellent guidelines for game design practice
By JB
There are two things the book does exceptionally well. First, it provides an extraordinarily thorough and very entertaining history of how play has been used throughout history to critique, subvert, explore alternatives to dominant paradigms, etc. My favorite example of this is Flanagan's discussion of girls' play with dolls in the Victorian era. I had read before that doll play functions to socialize girls into the domestic roles they are expected to occupy as adults. What was entirely new to me is that girls would often use these dolls to play in ways that challenged conventions. On this topic and on others, Flanagan's research is excellent and her insights are revelatory.

Flanagan also provides practical guidelines for designing play experiences that encourage critique and subversion. Without going into to detail, I will say that I found this part of the book particularly useful re: the practice of designing "serious" or issues-focused games.

Highly recommended for game designers who are interested in working beyond the entertainment-focused mainstream, and also highly recommended for anyone with interest in the history of play.

Asimov on Physics, by Isaac Asimov

Rear cover notes: "Once again, the vast scientific knowledge and engaging imagination of Isaac Asimov illuminates many of physics' most challenging puzzles: what is the tiniest particle of time (how small can a second get?), is there an ultimate highest temperature (how hot is hottest?), in the tantalizing sub-universe of the neutrino are there particles without mass (can something exist without being there?), and perhaps most baffling of all, can any scientist explain what entropy means (does a law of physics exist only in double talk?). Using such diverse and fascinating sources as high school gym class, Porgy and Bess, and Shakespeare to illustrate its points, ASIMOV ON PHYSICS brings the laws of our universe from the mysterious reaches of the unknown and places them squarely in our lives. From the simplest acts of everyday life - walking, hearing, seeing - we are introduced into the exhilarating world of physics - gravity, ultrasonics, light-eating black holes - a world that at first may seem impossible to understand, but through the magic of Asimov, becomes as enjoyable and intriguing as a night sky full of stars. With photographs and biographical sketches."

The Good Doctor Talks Physics
By John M. Ford
This book collects seventeen of Isaac Asimov's essays on physics that appeared between December 1958 and October 1965 in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. They cover the full range of physics mysteries, from subatomic particles to the larger-than-Earth objects of outer space. Three of the more interesting chapters are:

"Catching Up with Newton" explains the equations and influence of gravity, using examples from Earth, near-Earth orbit, the moon, and more distant points of interest in the solar system. Asimov gently takes "newsmen" to task for their misconceptions about this topic.

"The Ultimate Split of the Second" explores the challenges of measuring--and understanding--very short time intervals. We learn about subatomic particles, the speed of light, and how to measure distance between our sun and other stars.

"Order! Order!" takes on the difficult concept of entropy, that the universe proceeds inevitably toward decreased organization over time. Asimov reviews the history of this idea, crediting historical figures with key insights and blaming them for their poor explanations.

The physics in these essays is now partially out of date. But they are worth reading to admire The Good Doctor's simple explanations, everyday analogies, and easy conversational style. Isaac Asimov is the early master of popular science writing and should be remembered. Readers may also enjoy Asimov on Chemistry, Asimov On Astronomy, and Asimov On Numbers.

Physics for mortals
By Stratiotes Doxha Theon
One of the best introductions to physics ever written. Conscise and plain even for the most novice science reader. Before the "for Dummies" series there was the "Asimov on" series and this was the best of that series. Higly recommended especially for the young person who enjoys science but also good for developing a love for physics in the first place.

Nearly 50 years between readings, and I can STILL recommend it to friends and family!
By H. M. Rothman
I was introduced to this series [Asimov On ...] in high school;
I read this in high school, and thought it taught me a lot.
I bought it for my children [and re-read it],
and it is *still* well-worth the read.

The Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini

A Stunning Novel of Hope and Redemption

Taking us from Afghanistan in the final days of the monarchy to the present, The Kite Runner is the unforgettable and beautifully told story of the friendship between two boys growing up in Kabul. Raised in the same household and sharing the same wet nurse, Amir and Hassan grow up in different worlds: Amir is the son of a prominent and wealthy man, while Hassan, the son of Amir's father's servant, is a Hazara -- a shunned ethnic minority. Their intertwined lives, and their fates, reflect the eventual tragedy of the world around them. When Amir and his father flee the country for a new life in California, Amir thinks that he has escaped his past. And yet he cannot leave the memory of Hassan behind him.

The Kite Runner is a novel about friendship and betrayal, and about the price of loyalty. It is about the bonds between fathers and sons, and the power of fathers over sons -- their love, their sacrifices, and their lies. Written against a backdrop of history that has not been told in fiction before, The Kite Runner describes the rich culture and beauty of a land in the process of being destroyed. But through the devastation, Khaled Hosseini offers hope: through the novel's faith in the power of reading and storytelling, and in the possibilities he shows us for redemption.

Amazon.com Review
In his debut novel, The Kite Runner, Khaled Hosseini accomplishes what very few contemporary novelists are able to do. He manages to provide an educational and eye-opening account of a country's political turmoil--in this case, Afghanistan--while also developing characters whose heartbreaking struggles and emotional triumphs resonate with readers long after the last page has been turned over. And he does this on his first try.

The Kite Runner follows the story of Amir, the privileged son of a wealthy businessman in Kabul, and Hassan, the son of Amir's father's servant. As children in the relatively stable Afghanistan of the early 1970s, the boys are inseparable. They spend idyllic days running kites and telling stories of mystical places and powerful warriors until an unspeakable event changes the nature of their relationship forever, and eventually cements their bond in ways neither boy could have ever predicted. Even after Amir and his father flee to America, Amir remains haunted by his cowardly actions and disloyalty. In part, it is these demons and the sometimes impossible quest for forgiveness that bring him back to his war-torn native land after it comes under Taliban rule. ("...I wondered if that was how forgiveness budded, not with the fanfare of epiphany, but with pain gathering its things, packing up, and slipping away unannounced in the middle of the night.")

Some of the plot's turns and twists may be somewhat implausible, but Hosseini has created characters that seem so real that one almost forgets that The Kite Runner is a novel and not a memoir. At a time when Afghanistan has been thrust into the forefront of America's collective consciousness ("people sipping lattes at Starbucks were talking about the battle for Kunduz"), Hosseini offers an honest, sometimes tragic, sometimes funny, but always heartfelt view of a fascinating land. Perhaps the only true flaw in this extraordinary novel is that it ends all too soon. --Gisele Toueg

From Publishers Weekly
Hosseini's stunning debut novel starts as an eloquent Afghan version of the American immigrant experience in the late 20th century, but betrayal and redemption come to the forefront when the narrator, a writer, returns to his ravaged homeland to rescue the son of his childhood friend after the boy's parents are shot during the Taliban takeover in the mid '90s. Amir, the son of a well-to-do Kabul merchant, is the first-person narrator, who marries, moves to California and becomes a successful novelist. But he remains haunted by a childhood incident in which he betrayed the trust of his best friend, a Hazara boy named Hassan, who receives a brutal beating from some local bullies. After establishing himself in America, Amir learns that the Taliban have murdered Hassan and his wife, raising questions about the fate of his son, Sohrab. Spurred on by childhood guilt, Amir makes the difficult journey to Kabul, only to learn the boy has been enslaved by a former childhood bully who has become a prominent Taliban official. The price Amir must pay to recover the boy is just one of several brilliant, startling plot twists that make this book memorable both as a political chronicle and a deeply personal tale about how childhood choices affect our adult lives. The character studies alone would make this a noteworthy debut, from the portrait of the sensitive, insecure Amir to the multilayered development of his father, Baba, whose sacrifices and scandalous behavior are fully revealed only when Amir returns to Afghanistan and learns the true nature of his relationship to Hassan. Add an incisive, perceptive examination of recent Afghan history and its ramifications in both America and the Middle East, and the result is a complete work of literature that succeeds in exploring the culture of a previously obscure nation that has become a pivot point in the global politics of the new millennium.

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School-This beautifully written first novel presents a glimpse of life in Afghanistan before the Russian invasion and introduces richly drawn, memorable characters. Quiet, intellectual Amir craves the attention of his father, a wealthy Kabul businessman. Kind and self-confident Hassan is the son of Amir's father's servant. The motherless boys play together daily, and when Amir wins the annual kite contest, Hassan offers to track down the opponent's runaway kite as a prize. When he finds it, the neighborhood bullies trap and rape him, as Amir stands by too terrified to help. Their lives and their friendship are forever changed, and the memory of his cowardice haunts Amir as he grows into manhood. Hassan and his father return to the village of their ancestors, and later Amir and his father flee to Los Angeles to avoid political persecution. Amir attends college, marries, and fulfills his dream of becoming a writer. When Amir receives word of his former friend's death under the Taliban, he returns to Kabul to learn the fate of Hassan's son. This gripping story of personal redemption will capture readers' interest.

Your heart will soar
By Ron Franscell, Author of 'Morgue: A Life in Death'
The earth turns and the wind blows and sometimes some marvelous scrap of paper is blown against the fence for us to find. And once found, we become aware there are places out there that are both foreign and familiar. Funny what the wind brings.
And now it brings "The Kite Runner," a beautiful novel by Afghan-American Khaled Hosseini that ranks among the best-written and provocative stories of the year so far.
Hosseini's first novel -- and the first Afghan novel to be written originally in English -- "The Kite Runner" tells a heartbreaking story of the unlikely friendship between Amir, the son of a wealthy Afghan businessman, and Hassan, the son of his father's servant. Amir is Sunni; Hassan is Shi'a. One is born to a privileged class; the other to a loathed minority. One to a father of enormous presence; the other to a crippled man. One is a voracious reader; the other illiterate.
The poor Hassan is born with a hare lip, but Amir's gaps are better hidden, deep inside.
Yet Amir and Hassan live and play together, not simply as friends, but as brothers without mothers. Their intimate story traces across the expansive canvas of history, 40 years in Afghanistan's tragic evolution, like a kite under a gathering storm. The reader is blown from the last days of Kabul's monarchy -- salad days in which the boys lives' are occupied with school, welcome snows, American cowboy movies and neighborhood bullies -- into the atrocities of the Taliban, which turned the boys' green playing fields red with blood.
This unusually eloquent story is also about the fragile relationship fathers and sons, humans and their gods, men and their countries. Loyalty and blood are the ties that bind their stories into one of the most lyrical, moving and unexpected books of this year.
Hosseini's title refers to a traditional tournament for Afghan children in which kite-flyers compete by slicing through the strings of their opponents with their own razor-sharp, glass-encrusted strings. To be the child who wins the tournament by downing all the other kites -- and to be the "runner" who chases down the last losing kite as it flutters to earth -- is the greatest honor of all.
And in that metaphor of flyer and runner, Hosseini's story soars.
And fear not, gentle reader. This isn't a "foreign" book. Unlike Boris Pasternak's "Dr. Zhivago," Hosseini's narrative resonates with familiar rhythms and accessible ideas, all in prose that equals or exceeds the typical American story form. While exotic Afghan customs and Farsi words pop up occasionally, they are so well-defined for the reader that the book is enlightening and fascinating, not at all tedious.
Nor is it a dialectic on Islam. Amir's beloved father, Baba, is the son of a wise judge who enjoys his whiskey, television, and the perks of capitalism. A moderate in heart and mind, Hosseini has little good to say about Islamic extremism.
"The Kite Runner" is a song in a new key. Hosseini is an exhilaratingly original writer with a gift for irony and a gentle, perceptive heart. His canvas might be a place and time Americans are only beginning to understand, but he paints his art on the page, where it is intimate and poignant.

Stunning, epic, extraordinary debut novel
By Peggy Vincent
I read 2-3 books a week, and this is without a doubt my favorite of this year. No, I'll go further: it's one of maybe 8-10 books I'd choose to take to a deserted isle. I've put The Kite Runner directly into the hands of perfect strangers in book stores and said, "Read this one."
In a nutshell, Amir, the son of a well-to-do Afghani , has a best friend, Hassan, who is the illiterate child of Amir's father's long-time servant. Both children are motherless. A horrific event, a secret kept, the loss of personal honor, and a lie come between the boys. From that rift, the story moves forward as Amir and his father emigrate to California, where Amir matures, marries, and becomes a successful writer, but is still plagued by those old sins and lies. Then comes a revelation of still one more long-held secret that sets Amir on a return trip to Afghanistan (now under the worst years of Taliban dominance) to rescue Hassan's child. Author Hosseini doesn't shy from one iota of unpleasantness, and the result is a book with a perfect narrative arc, a sterling story line, unforgettable characters, and and and and... I had the opportunity to meet the author very briefly (just to shake his hand and gush a bit about his extraordinary book) at Books by the Bay in San Francisco and am delighted to report that he is charming, approachable, and thoroughly engaging. He deserves all the accolades that are coming his way.
Buy The Kite Runner. Read it. Then go back to the store and buy 2 more signed 1st editions - one to keep as an investment and one to give to your best friend.
...what a fine book!

It's a story of Paradise . . . lost
By Dennis Frampton
This is a truly magnificent book! Without a doubt one of the very best stories I have ever read, not just because it is so beautifully written, but also because it is an important story. It takes place during the last thirty years of turbulent history in Afghanistan, and deals with a family and their love for each other and for their country. Author Khalid Hosseini no doubt has drawn heavily on his own life experiences to bring us this story. He was born to a wealthy family in Kabul Afghanistan and came to America as a political refugee in 1980. In The Kite Runner, Amir is the son of a prominent Pashtun family; his best friend, Hassan is the son of their servant man and a Hazara, a much hated ethnic minority. Despite their ethnic differences, Amir and Hassan are close friends throughout their childhood, both of them always mindful of Hassan's servant status. The two boys grow and learn, one of them privileged, the other deprived, both of them secure in the bosom of a prominent Pashtun family, both loved by the patriarch of that family, while the winds of change blew ceaselessly over the Afghan landscape. This story traces the lives of Amir and Baba his proud Father, and of Hassan and Ali his Father and faithful servant to Baba. In July of 1973, the people of Afghanistan woke to learn that while their King Zahir Shah was away in Italy, the Afghan monarchy had been ended in a bloodless coup led by the King's cousin Daoud Kahn. For a while there was peace in their lives but it was not to last. Before the end of that decade came first the Russians with soldiers, tanks and helicopter gun ships, and when they left, came the years of wanton destruction by the countless tribal war lords. This was to be ended, they thought mercifully, by the arrival of the Taliban, who at first brought order to the chaos, but later proved to be the most ruthless of killers. Amir and his Father left Afghanistan when the Russians arrived and came to America to settle in an Afghan community in San Francisco. However, the ties to their homeland and to the family they had left behind were to haunt them for years. One day, Amir received a telephone call from a friend in Pakistan and decided he must return. What he found there was a revelation of the awful changes which had been brought to his homeland and its people since his childhood. Don't buy this book because it is about that part of the world which changed our lives, don't buy it because it is a story about Muslims, don't even buy it because it is in a way a modern "Gone With The Wind" a story of a strong family in turbulent times. Buy it because it is a wonderful meaningful story, beautifully, sensitively written, by a man whose first language was not even our language, but who has mastered it as few of us have, and who has shown an unusual understanding of the workings of the human mind in times of great mental and physical stress.
