Review

“This book is an interesting change from the usual run of introductions to environmental psychology.  It deals interesting and thoroughly with a wide range of issues, and generally the many authors present their views and accounts of research in a clear and easy-to-follow manner.”  (Psychology Learning & Teaching, 1 November 2013)

From the Back Cover
Whether made up of concrete skyscrapers or ancient redwoods, the environment influences people's lives in many ways; reciprocally, this environment is in many ways a product of human activity. The most up-to-date introductory textbook on its subject, Environmental Psychology: An Introduction provides a valuable overview of the interplay between humans and their varied environments. A response to the growing interest in environmental psychology as a way to promote sustainable environments, this text incorporates the work of over fifty well-known scholars to examine this increasingly important area.

Environmental Psychology addresses questions of how environments affect humans, what motivates people to act pro-environmentally, and how humans can be encouraged to establish and maintain a sustainable environment. The book discusses both environmental factors that threaten and promote human wellbeing, and elaborates on a wide range of factors influencing actions that affect environmental conditions, including contextual factors, motivational factors and habits. Furthermore, the book demonstrates ways to encourage pro-environmental behaviour including information strategies, incentives and persuasive technology, and describes factors influencing the acceptability of environmental policies.

Environmental Psychology provides an international approach, including non-Western and developing countries, and offers comprehensive reviews of key research lines in environmental psychology.

Interesting, but confusing
By Adrian Lombardo
Very interesting book on a subject that every designer should know the basics of. The front cover looks promising, made me think this kind of pleasant environment would be analyzed in the book. What color combinations are beautiful? How is a strong sense of place achieved? Why do so many people like Gaudi's architecture? Instead I am left confused on many issues.

Most confusing: What is environmental psychology really about? Is it about the psychology of how humans is affected by their immediate environment (What interests me as a designer) or the psychology of how to make people more interested in environmental protection? These seems like two barely related subject, and both are discussed in the book. Does "environmental psychology" refer to both of these subjects?
Especially confusing was the chapters "In Latin America", as if Latin america is so different from the rest of the world or the people there so strange that they have their own psychology.

If you are a designer interested in how the environment you design can affect people psychologically, there certainly is useful information in this book. If you are an environmentalist trying to understand better people's attitudes and trying to affect them, there will also be some interesting information. I don't think a lot of people will fit both of these categories.

OK, but not thrill packed.
By Reader
This book was written with an emphasis on European research and applications, not targeted for the US market. I can't say that I realized that when I first purchased it. The book is OK, and I read the whole thing- but I can't say that I was engrossed in it. I am a retired psychologist, interested in environmental issues.

Good reference
By Victoria G.
I have several years of education and can honestly say that a lot of text books are less than enthralling and downright boring. This one was not. I really enjoyed the content and how it was written.
