Wide of the Mark
By Royal James
I am at a bit of a loss in how to review this book because I am not sure who is suppose to be the intended reader. The book is disjointed and seems more designed to give the authors a vehicle for making a little money rather than an honest attempt to educate the reader. Reading it reminded me of a College professor I once had who despite a great reputation as a researcher, he did not have a clue how to communicate the information he possessed to the student. After sitting through one of his classes, you were little wiser for the experience other than firm in your conviction that you would never sign up for one of his classes again.
This book does contain some useful information but it is scattered and not presented in any logical order. The one thing I came away with is the authors really seem to be fascinated with how a reflux column condenser works though their discussion of this apparatus is shot gunned throughout the book. In many places some illustrations would help to explain complicated points but sadly illustrations are few and far between.
In good conscience I cannot recommend this book to anyone. It is too disjointed for the novice and too general for the professional. The slip cover is the high point of the book. Probably should have only rated it with one star but there is a little useful information in the book, hence the two star rating but I really cannot recommend this title to anyone.

Disapponted and Very Annoyed
By Mike L
I was looking forward to reading this as definitve information on rum dsitillation practices is harder to come by than that of whisky.
I was to be greatly disappointed however, and ultimately extremely annoyed by the fractured nature of the book (it is written by 3 authors and it shows). I ended up with sticky notes all through the book highlighting obvious errors and inconsistencies. I has all the hallmarks of a book which was cobbled together in haste, with little or no proofreading.
It is 'puffed out' at both the start and end with trivia. Chapter 1 purports to tell the 'story of rum' and entirely omits Australia as a rum producing country, a country where rum became so important to the early economy that it led to an armed takeover of the goverment. I commend Wikipedia and the Ministry of Rum to the authors.
The section on New England distilleries was interesting and an expansion of this chapter would be beneficial. Again, I had the impression that they limited this content to the closest distilleries because it entailed the least effort.
If there is to be a second edition, I hope the authors make substantial improvements - as it stands this book is at kindergarten level as a serious guide to intending commercial distillers

One of the best distilling books out there.
By William Rogers
Very well written and researched books. I was surprised that the distillers that they talked to gave out such detailed information. It gives very accurate information on what to look for when making rum, without being too technical. Yes, there are text books available that get into the nitty gritty of where flavors comes from in terms of different esters, etc.
If you're getting into distilling rum, as either a micro-distiller or as a home distiller, this book is an excellent place to start.
